“The Sinatra Special, steak marinated for hours (if not days) in pizzaiola sauce, topped with fresh mozzarella.”
A Red Hook legend (it inspired the 30 Rock sandwich-day episode), Defonte's opened a Manhattan branch and yes, it's just as good. Plan on getting five or six diffferent sandwiches; you'll never be able to appreciate it otherwise.
Best Sandwich. Are you hungover right now and looking for the most amazing sandwich on a Saturday morning? Are you not hungover right now and looking for the most amazing sandwich on a Saturday morning? Well, if the answer to either of those questions is yes, then Defonte’s should be your immediate destination. They are also open during the week, so if you work close enough (or for those of you “living the dream” who have weekdays free) then you should make it your lunch stop as well. What to expect – a generously sized sandwich piled with any of you favorite Italian topping. The crown jewel? The Sinatra Special, steak marinated for hours (if not days) in pizzaiola sauce, topped with fresh mozzarella. Messy for sure, but luckily, napkins are provided. Yea, they have other stuff too. Just try not to eat too fast.
Brooklyn's best subs come west.. The original Defonte's in Red Hook is a no-frills Italian deli famous for its roast beef and mozzarella sandwiches. Its sister, located in Murray Hill, is exactly the same thing: a long, narrow, decor-free space with a counter on one side. The best parts of the Defonte's experience--the warm, thin eggplant slices, the supple, salty mozzarella, the light coating of tomato sauce--are all here in spades, and locals have responded by jamming the place at lunchtime. There are a few Italian specialties in a steam tray, including a pasta of the day, and these are reliably good, too.
