Although New York had its share of boozy izakayas and yakitori joints, Inakaya in the New York Times building is the city's first full-blown robatayaki restaurant. The setting is highly formalized, with kneeling, traditionally clad cooks shouting in unison throughout the night and the serving of grilled specialties on long paddles that look like pizza sticks. The food is straightforward enough, and of uniformly high quality, but astronomically expensive--a single fish flown in that day from Japan might be $65. But the noise and action in the room, and the availability of some cheaper items,…

Won't be back too soon...

If you're crazy about freshly grilled deep sea red snapper, king crab and lobster - YES, this is the place to go. All other dishes are average and you can get those in other much cheaper Japanese restaurants in NYC.

By the way, getting all those seafood I mentioned plus some other small veggie dishes and two beers. Almost $400 for two people.

  • Pros: Good deep sea red snapper and king crab
  • Cons: All the other food are average and way over priced

Only average

Yes, the place can run easily to over $100 for two since you can't just order grill veggie and odd dishes and be satisfied. Most odd single dishes which are side dish portions are around $8. Then the larger portion dishes run on average $27 a dish. The Robatayaki dishes are simple grill dishes that we did enjoy for its fresh natural taste with salt. The Robata flounder we ordered is good and the non robata rice dish is good. Everything else is only average and can be found at most other Japanese yakitori places for cheaper. I think this place is not as entertaining as it is hyped up to be. The atmosphere is only so so (no music) and shouting out of what is ordered is not as unison or consistent as it should be. I think the one in Japan is better.

  • Pros: fresh food
  • Cons: price and value
