I HAD long hair!!
by X27
I went to Mizu a couple of days ago, excited about getting my hair cut by an apprentice who had just finished advanced classes. I left an hour later, fighting back tears.
I met the apprentice, Judy, and explained that I’d had layers cut in my hair a year ago, but now they were all grown out and I wanted them redone. I said, emphatically, that I did NOT want much taken off the back at all. I explained to her (as I’ve explained to every stylist that I’ve seen in the last several years) that I know that the back of my hair is uneven, but that it isn’t because I don’t take good care of my hair or cut it enough, but because my hair falls out, a lot, from the roots, and that I think it’s caused by a thyroid problem. Usually, when I tell a stylist this, they pretend to listen and then launch into a patronizing speech about how I need to cut my hair more often, because otherwise, the splits will travel up the hair shaft causing the hair to split, blah, blah, blah...Judy at least seemed to take me seriously. I had my hair washed and then Damian, the supervisor/senior stylist came over and Judy explained to him what she was going to do to my hair.
Damian commented on the length of time since I’d last had my hair cut. I said that I cut my split ends. Damian laughed and said, “Oh, you cut it YOURSELF”, with the air of, “Oh, you poor, silly, retarded child, thinking you could actually cut your own hair”. Now, I am not an idiot...I do not randomly hack away at my hair with a pair of dull, rusty craft scissors. I have a pair of hair-cutting scissors that are used only to cut hair. Once to several times a week, I go through my hair, painstakingly, section by section, and cut any split that I find. Therefore, the splits do not travel up the length of my hair. Of course, Damian then launched into the speech about getting your hair cut more often, because otherwise the splits will blah, blah, blah. I should’ve gotten up out of the chair and left right then and there.
The haircut commenced and immediately Judy started trying to persuade me to cut more than I wanted, talking about how much fuller it would look. I agreed to letting her cut a little more, but then held my hand under my chest and said, “I don’t want it any shorter than this”. Long story short (too late, I know), my hair is a good 2 inches shorter than that. Actually, only the very longest part of my hair in the very back (since it’s kind of u-shaped) is 2 inches shorter, most of my hair is MUCH much shorter! 2 inches = 4 months to grow back! I was so upset I practically had to bite my tongue not to cry and/or scream and/or curse. I left in a rage.
When I got home, I realized that although my hair overall is too short, the layers that frame my face are actually much too long! I had wanted to be able to pull my hair back into a ponytail or put it up and leave a tendril out on each side to make it look softer and prettier. Well, I can’t. The layers around my hairline (forehead to temple) are ridiculously long - 2 to 4 inches below my chin! - so I can’t do it. I tried and the layers are too long, blunt, and choppy, so it looks ridiculous, it looks absurd! This is not (as the post on SalonApprentice said) “a $300 haircut for $20”. This is a $20 haircut. I first had layers cut in my hair 2 years ago. David Groshen at Face Station did it and it looked fabulous. That was a $100 haircut that looked like a $300 haircut. A year later, I had the layers redone by an apprentice at Salon Ziba and it looked fabulous. That was a FREE haircut that looked like a $300 haircut. A year later, I went to Mizu and now I HATE my hair.
Every time I look in a mirror I want to cry. They did not f up my hair for a day or a week or a month, they f’d up my hair for MONTHS to come! I have to live with this every day. It’s not even Winter and my hair won’t be a length that I am at least somewhat happy with until Spring.
Love Nico & Nicole

Just went to Mizu for the first time ... and I love it! I've been seeing Nicole for years and was super upset to hear she was leaving her previous salon. I live in the West Village so the thought of having to go above 14th Street for a haircut was not appealing, but I'm glad I did.
The salon is intimate, but not too small, and everyone there is lovely... I couldn't have felt more welcome.
An added bonus was my new colorist, Nico! I love love love the color he chose for me. I left all of the decisions to see where he would go, and I couldn't love the color more... I feel like I have been going to him for years!
Ask for Nicole, new kid on the block

Ask for Nicole. Best haircut ever. She gets it right every time, has a great sense of humor which is an added bonus. Followed her from her last salon. I like it so much better. Smaller operation, less stressful.
My sister introduced me to her a few years ago and I've been a fan ever since. BTW my sister also goes to her so she's good with all kinds of hair.
If you're like me, a guy that appreciates a great hair cut with good service and no drama, come see NIcole.
Great People, great service. Cool sophisticated yet simple with a laid back environment. A no fuss salon, just what a guy needs.
Nicole is amazing!

My fabulous stylist Nicole, recently joined Mizu. I love her, she took me from a chin length disaster- when I first went to her in serious need of help- to awesome hair halfway down my back. Every single hair cut she's given me has been amazing, easy to style and packed with compliments. Once even from the Starbucks barista.
I wasn't that happy to hear she had left her old cool downtown salon and gone to Mizu in Park Av. I expected to be greeted by a stuffy staff as the client for the new girl.
I could not have been more wrong.
Since the moment I called to make an appointment with her they were super nice and accommodating. When I got there I found they were all even nicer in person. Mizu is a cool downtown vibe salon in Park Av.
Also they have an amazing selection of product, Bumble, Oribe, Kerastase and so many more. I love having that selection.
I am very particular with my hair, have tons and tons of it and have had my good share of bad cuts at really good salons but Nicole has not given me a haircut I don't LOVE in the time I've been going to her. I recommend her to anyone that is looking to get an great cut by an amazing stylist. Could not give her enough praises.
Love Nicole and loved Mizu. Amazing place, cool and talented people.
