What People Are Saying About Shampoo Avenue B

Guitar riffs echo onto the sidewalk outside this rocking sliver of a salon; the sound intensifies inside where a giant, spray-painted logo and funky paintings by local artists communicate the non-traditional vibe. Clearly, artistic expression is the overarching theme--and at the five cutting stations, stylists eschew looks from TV for more street-savvy and sexy cuts, as well as creative colors and highlights and innovative straightening techniques. –

Editor's Tips

Save Money:
Dig the art on the wall? You're in luck--it's for sale and, for the most part, is affordable (usually starting around $40).
The Extras:
Hair extensions are available, but require a consultation beforehand.
On the Menu:
Straightening treatments are comprehensive. In addition to Japanese ($400-plus), a new Brazilian technique is also offered for $300. With an all-natural shampoo and neutralizer, stylists pledge that it's less damaging than other metods, and it lasts three months. Traditionalists can still get the chemical relaxer ($100).

An Amazing Experience

by lizasinger at Citysearch

I bought the Brazilian Blowout through Lifebooker. I also booked a haircut. I went to Aut and she did an amazing job! I came in with extremely frizzy damaged hair. I am multi-ethnic so my texture can be really hard to deal with. I left there with silky, lovely locks and she somehow even managed to keep most of the length. I would recommend this place to anyone!

Totally happy!!!

"Yes we have an appointment, just NOT for YOU". Do not use.

by pamimo at Citysearch

Marylin, the manager was 'booking' my appointment for today (this after trying to book for a MONTH and a half - seriously). They don't open until noon, do not answer the phone and actually request that you email them only to inform that you should call for an appt. Really?? If it wasn't so funny it would be sad that this is how people have to take advantage of a "deal" from Lifebooker.

Next, after I carefully explained to MARYLIN, the MANAGER that I have been trying to get in for a simple color and cut with a recommended stylist she informed that she was once again unavailable but I may try another stylist today at 4pm. "Okay, let's do this". ONLY THING is NOW that upon confirming the appointment before hanging up I mentioned my lifebooker certificate as instructed to and that is when Marylin informed that I could no longer have the appointment today. WTF? And, I do not use foul language, but this was just inane.

I then continued in friendly way to explain that it would really be appreciated if she could make it work as am going on holiday and have tried for all of this time and she steadfastly refused and informed "lifebooker huh?, no we book that differently". "You cannot have this appointment". Nothing like a deal with a shitty salon that makes the deal feel like nothing short of a hassle. No Shampoo avenue b for this otherwise high end salon user, nor will I hope it be for anyone else to use a company with no customer service. Did I mention that I called back briefly so that I could have a name of whom refused this and Marylin in a 'in your face obnoxious type of way that only certain type of folks choose to reply' exaggerated her name, spelled it loudly and made it all to clear - I will leave out my real sentiments. I hope this helps others who are can choose from so many other wonderful places to have your hair done.

ABOVE & BEYOND SALON WITH SYLYSE

by afgymnst at Citysearch

I went in for Highlights and have a very difficult head of hair to color and from the moment I walked into the salon I was loving every minute of my experience. The hospitable greeting from behind desk and to the nice bottled water i desperately needed in the city heat my first experience at Shampoo Avenue B . A good friend of mine recommended the salon and I am extremely particular about my hair (neurotic one might say). Sylyse, was beyond helpful in comforting with my nerves and assured me that I would leave loving my new hair color and I did!!!! I would go back to Sylyse every day of the week if I could from cut, to color to blow dry I never knew I could be so happy! THANKS SHAMPOO AVE B

  • Pros: everything from hospitality, music, atmosphere, professional

Turned a bad experience into a great one...A+ cust. service

by lgeminder at Citysearch

I purchased 2 deals for Shampoo Avenue B through the livingsocial website. I went for cut and color and scheduled a keratin treatment with Jenni, and without dishing all the dirt, did not have a good experience either time...at all.

Fortunately, I later on spoke to one of the managers (Naomi) who was extremely apologetic and helpful, and scheduled an appt for me with Karuna (one of the owners). I was very happy with my visit and would recommend Karuna (and her assistant, Anthony) without hesitation. From what I could tell, the other stylists are really great as well.

I would usually not go back to a place where I had a bad first experience, but the level of customer service displayed by the owners and mgmt was so impressive, that it was well worth it.

Also...the keratin (brazilian) treatment that they do does NOT require you to go 3 days without washing ur hair or working out...they wash it and blowdry right there in the salon. Also, if they are running a few minutes behind schedule, you can go to the cafe next door and have a complimentary coffee or tea!

  • Pros: Keratin treatment that allows you to wash hair same day
