This place sucks ROYALLY!!! I went with my out of town friends and my wife because we heard they had good Pina Coladas and the place next door (Sea Food City)(which has excellent coladas and good food) was not an option for us due to the type of ghetto diva and self proclaimed big shot clientele which frequents the place (shame, cause the food and drinks are good). Anyway, the coladas were decent (not gonna lie) but they had no alcohol in them(as far as I could tell)(I'm an occassional drinker, so I should be able to taste the slightest hint of alcohol). No one at my table could taste alcohol in their drinks either. I pointed this out to the waiter which proceeded to give me some lame reasonings such as the sugar in the drink turns to alcohol when it ferments. I had to tell him to spare me the excuses and serve us plain water from then on. My main meal ($20) which was the griled salmon with vegetables was awfull and not even worth five dollars. It was way too salty, dry, really thin and small (about a quarter inch thick, five inches long and three inches wide). Not saying that it was, but it tasted microwaved. The vegetables weren't even fresh. My wifes dish which was the mofongo, was also way over sasoned. My friends made comment to us but were clearly dissapointed. One of them tasted her meal and refused to eat the rest, claiming she wasn't hungry even though she mentioned she was famished an hour earlier. For $170 for four people (one drink and one dish each), the portions were small and overseasoned and the service was less than mediocre. I was going to leave a less than appropriate tip but noticed that the gratuity was already included in the price. i guess thats what happens in places that suck, they can't count on good quality so they make sure to tip themselves before you do. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. steer clear of it.
YUM YUM. the best thing ever the plates run from about 50 dollars and up they are very fresh too
Can't judge a book by it's cover. The place is as beautiful as you see on the website; the name solicits thoughts of Tapas and Sangria in Madrid or San Juan. The experience ends there. The food is overpriced for what you get-- they charge Sammy's prices for 1/2 the food. They substitute items without letting the customer know. The music did not go with the place and was booming over loud large speakers. The waitress was actually very nice, polite and attentive; but management presented her like a waitress at IHOP which contrasted the look of the restaurant. Also should be upfront about Hookah Bar as some people do not want to dine where there is any kind of smoking. Tried it once. Will not go back; will not recommend.
We was treated like they were doing us a fovor.
After 30 mins. they brought over water , no bread for another 12 mins.
Our order was wrong 2 times , The help make no effort to speak English 3 tables were served before us and all came in between 10 and 35 mins after we were seated .No napkins or utencils untill after the food finally came . the order was all wrong ,so we waited another 20 mins. Most of the food was pretty good
My lobster was only 1/2 cooked so I sent it back ,and was stilled charged .I took the bill paid it and left
I would boycott this place and nerver recommend or go back THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE and so are the no english speaking people who work there .
Don't waste your time or money
THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE.
This place did not serve my boyfriend and I. We noticed that people that came in 30 minutes after us were served and let go!!!! Then we notice that the other races were served in a timely matter. Furthermore, they were even given bread and refills when we weren't even offered it!!!!! We go fed up and concluded that they just didn't want to serve us so decided to pay for what we ordered which were 2 Martinis, 2 sodas(no refills included) and a side of potatoes (the total came up to $46!!!!) On top of that they charge GRATUITY FOR 2!!!!!! They waitress didn't even deserve it she was horrible but on karma terms we paid it. In addition, I think our food was tampered with!!!!!!! What a horrible place they should be ashamed to call themselves an establishment.
DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. THEY SHOULD BE RUN OUT OF BUSINESS.
I tried Tapas on CIty Island last night with my son, daughter-in-law and friend. Since it was a beautiful evening and the interior of the restaurant was dark and dingy, we wanted to eat at its small alfresco area located in front of the restaurant and enclosed by four barricades. There was a couple already there seated at a table for 2. A waitress and female manager (or owner) set up two table for two next to the couple already seated. The space was entirely taken up by these 6 tables.
To begin with, we should have left when we noticed that the tables set up for us was on a slanted incline toward the street, so much so that the water glasses were sliding off. When we complained to the waitress, she brought out two pieces of cardboard and placed them under the tables' legs, which didn't help at all because then the tables were still uneven AND wobbly. She then disappeared and we tried replacing the tables in another direction. That was somewhat helpful but not great. The problem with the alfresco area is that the cement flooring is terribly cracked and uneven. If you're going to have a restaurant with an alfresco area, you should spend some money to re-pave the area to even out the cracks and flooring.
After a long wait, our waitress finally appeared (with no utensils, napkins, salt, pepper, bread basket ... nothing) to take food and drink orders. We questioned why the entrees were not accompanied with side dishes (rice/beans, potatoes, greens, etc), as in most restaurants. She explained the restaurant's policy that any side dishes were an extra charge. In other words, if you ordered a meat or seafood dish, that's all you got!! Imagine a dish with just meat or seafood with nothing to go with it? If you want tostones, rice/beans/ potatoes, greens, whatever ... you have to pay extra ... $5.00 and up for any side order to go along with the entree.
We placed our orders ... two of shrimp, one with salad and one with french fries, one order of chicharron de pollo (fried, boned chicken chunks) with tostones, and one of pork chunks with rice/black beans and amarillos (fried sweet plaintain). The ladies stuck with iced water but my son ordered a frozen margarita (HUGE mistake!!). The margarita was so watered down and horrible tasting that, after complaining, he was offered another one free (which was just as bad).
While we waited for our food, no bread or any other amenities were placed at our tables. After a long while, the waitress finally appeared with the dishes but no utensils. We had to sit there and stare at our food while she went back for those and napkins. When she re-appeared, we also asked for some salt, and garlic mojito for the tostones. After another long wait, she returned with the salt but, instead of the garlic mojito, placed a small paper cup of horrid salad dressing on the table. When I complained about that substitution, she said she would check with the chef and, after ANOTHER long wait, came back to tell me that the chef did not make garlic mojito because the owners and chef are Ecuadoran and do not use garlic mojito on tostones. By that time the tostones were cold and I just gave up!!
To summarize, the chicharron de pollo was great .. really crispy and delicious tasting ... the shrimps were so-so, and the pork chunks in a dark gravy were OK. As for the side dishes (for which we paid extra) ... the french fried potatoes were crisp and delicious, the salad was outstanding, the black beans and rice were so-so, and the tostones, although sliced thin and crispy, were missing its star accompaniment.
To add insult to injury, when we got the bill we noticed that the tip (for horrible waitressing service) was added. I'm a firm believer that tips are EARNED, not entitled.
All four of us agreed that we DEFINITELY WOULD NOT go back to Tapas in City Island.
Think Twice Before Eating Here.
tried Tapas on CIty Island tonight with my sister; we decided to eat at the bar. It was a TERRIBLE experience!
To begin with, the bar was dirty and no one seemed concerned about cleaning it. We sat completely unattended for over 15 minutes and had to REQUEST a set up and that the bar be cleaned. The restaurant wasn't crowded at all, maybe two tables occupied. Yet, we watched 5 employees carry on a extended conversation as if we didn't exist.
We started to walk out but wanted to give the place the benefit of the doubt. To play it safe, we ordered an advertised special- fried shrimp with fries/tostones (fried green plaintain). The food took FOREVER to come, tasted like old grease and was very subpar overall. I was of the impression the tostones had been cooked the day before and refried till hot. My sister ate one and tossed the rest. We also ordered blue pina coladas that were weak and when we questioned it, the bar tender spoke to us as if we didn't know what a pina colada was. It was rather insulting.
Another customer was drinking something in a snifter and when we inquired about what it was, thinking we might order it as well, the bar tender refused to tell us. It was downright rude. At that point, we just wanted to get out of there; the energy in the place was very unpleasant.
We eat out regularly and I can't remember having an experience this negative in a long time. When we returned to our car, some guys told us we should've eaten at Arty's;apparently, they knew of the lousy food and service at Tapas. Needless to say, it felt like a COMPLETE waste of money and I was given indigestion by the old grease flavor of the food.
City Island has many good restaurants, such as Crab Shanty, Lobster House, etc. I would definitely recommend one of those instead. People have different tastes, but poor service and lousy food is UNIVERSAL. Who needs to give their hard earned money to an establishment that acts like it doesn't care whether you come back or not?
Definitely avoid Tapas; they probably had employees submit favorable reviews to throw unsuspectiing people off. Just had a conversation with another friend who is very familiar with the restaurants on City Island and her opinion about Tapas was also negative...

Food was terrible, worst experience ruined my mothers day!. Food was terrible, rice was hard and the beans were burned! I had to wait an hour for appetizer, then had to wait an hour and half for my dinner. Chicken was dry and steak was chewy, while waiting for my rice and beans my chicken got cold! Manager was rude, this place ruined my mothers day! We had to pay for our meals and then go and get our dinner somewhere else. Dont ever go there!! Will never recommend to anyone!
Muy Delicioso!!. The Food was delicious, the atmosphere was inviting and the waitress was friendly!!! The thing I find funny is how other people are comparing this restaurant to the ghetto cafeteria of tony's or johnny's!!!! That is not food it's the equivalent of going to a fast food restaurant in the ghetto with tons of people who are rude with no manners and wouldn't know what good food is if it jumped up and bit you in the ass!!! You deserve to go there and leave class to go to Tapas!!! Tapas is very inexpensive and quite and enjoyable!! Definitely going back and planning to throw a party there!!!!
THE WORST DINING EXPER. EVER, STAY AWAY. I cant start to tell you how bad this place is. I started by trying to ask the waiter about the chef and he said he was great so i decIded to try it with my fiance. The drinks were horrible and slow. That should of been a tell but i stayed. Then i asked for a seafood soup and ceviche. OMG we waited for 45Min. and and 2 servings of bread. Well when the food finally came my soup was tomato sauce and water(discusting) and the ceviche was onions and tomato & 4 shrimps. this food was BLAND,BLAND,BLAND. well tomato sauce was plentyfull. I left the food and had to pay almost $100.00. we left and went to tonys pier for a meal that was totally enjoyable ,Plentyfull and affordable.
