ABSOLUTE WORST!
by Bruce Dee at Citysearch
Sadly, this place has really gone down the tubes since changing from PONGAL. It was once a neighborhood favorite of my wife and I. As for the food, I can no longer comment on it since it never arrived. The first sign of trouble was a "waitress" who instantly reminded me of the Lisa Kudlow character on the TV sitcom "Mad About You". First, she didn't bother to write down our order. Second, after 25 minutes of watching other people get their food, she came back to our table to ask us again what we ordered, offering some lame lie about a "computer crash" in a restaurant of only about 12-15 tables. Obviously, the other diners were not affected!
The whole experience was an insult. If I could rate Dakshin II with NO STARS, I would. We left and went down the street where we were treated and served professionally with great service and food.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Worst service EVER
First Glatt Kosher Indian in Manhattan: Winner
by RachelKlein at Citysearch
My husband and I sampled Dakshin II's food lst weekend and are so glad that the owners decided to go Kosher! As I work with many Indian people, I've always wanted to experience the rich tastes and spices that the world is always raving about. But there was never before a Kosher Indian place in the city. It was my first time eating this sort of food, but I thouroughly enjoyed each dish that I had. Its like nothing I've had before, but my tastebuds don't mind at all. The food is fresh, creamy, and rich. The staff is super descriptive and their recommmendations are spot on. I had the Chicken Tikka Masala and it was so filling and hearty; we were even able to take some home for later. The garlic naan bread smells so wholesome and fresh and the little chutney sauces pack their own delicious punches. I recommend this to everyone who is looking for a new neighborhood favorite!
- Pros: Glatt Kosher, large portions, exotic decor
Glatt Kosher!!!
by JonSnow at Citysearch
The prices are cheap, the food is abundant, and the service is great! I can't wait to take my family again for dinner! They have a full bar, I can take my grandparents since its Kosher and we all had a blast! Highly recommended.
- Pros: First ever Indian restaurant that is Glatt Kosher!
Sel et Poivre nor salty nor peppery
by Gourmand at Citysearch
I am french and went to Sel et Poivre convinced that I was going to have a nice dinner. The "Escargots" were an insult to this delicious appetizer. As for their "Couscous Royal"...it converted me to a republican. Terriiiible! My advice for anyone , if you want to try thisd restaurant.... froget about the two specialties mentioned above. What a pity!
- Pros: Quiet and
- Cons: Not the best of french cuisine
Best Deal in Town
by Ariella at Citysearch
I was a little skeptical when I read that Dakshin's buffet was only $7.99. So much so that I called the wait staff to make sure it wasn't a misprint on the menu. Dakshin's buffet is a bargain compared to the neighboring restaurants like Dawat and Chola, where a buffet usually costs me 6 bucks more. The Dakshin buffet has all of my favorites like tandoori chicken and a creamy chicken tikka masala. Their lamb roganjosh is like no other. It's a very filling, tasty, and varied buffet and I think more people should take advantage of it, especially for the price that its offered at. Another reason I love it: if you go on the weekend, they serve freshly made Dosas as part of the buffet. The dosas are crisp and come with a very thick sambar and cocunut chutney. Definitly give this restaurant a try, especially on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon if you want to take advantage of the fabulous dosas!
- Pros: inexpensive, dosas on the weekends
