A new Favorite in Midtown East – I met a friend at Pod Hotel and we did not want to walk around so went to East Side Social Club - what a GREAT choice!!!
To be honest I had read some of the recent reviews showing on Menupages and Yelp and they were pretty harsh so I definitely had mixed feelings about going there - but some time they say you have to try it yourself to find out the truth and I am so so glad I did that - it was very great experience. One reason I am writing the review is because my experience was so vastly different and better.
We had some martinis, and the Upper East Side - the best house cocktail and loved it. The Mac n Cheese, Potato Croquettes started the meal most excellently. I love the Steak Au Poivre - one of the best I have had. My friend enjoyed his Mushroom Ravioli a lot.
It was classy but relaxed place to sit down with fun jukebox type music. The servers were very friendly and their effort made up for some inexperience. The place was busy but not 100% packed.
I will definitely be come back here since many of my work related guests stay at the Pod Hotel.
I loved this place in Midtown East!!! – I went to this restaurant recently with 4 work colleagues for dinner and boy was I pleasantly surprised!
1) The ambiance - it was relaxed, unpretentious, laid back and not kitschy - just the way I like it. The music was nice but it can be fine tuned more.
2) The service was very friendly - our waitress had a winning smile. She was a bit green but her enthusiasm and attitude made up for it all.
3) The menu had a wide selection providing something for everyone. Even the one vegetarian in our gang who had over 9 veg choices - more than most other restaurants in city!! Special mention for Potato Croquette, Mac n Cheese, Diavolo Di Mare, Mushroom Ravioli (vegetarian) Steak Au Poivre and Branzino.
4) We had a few cocktails - loved the Upper East and Betancourt. With dinner we had a couple of red wines - love the selection. We got an odd mix - started with a Pinot Noir and followed with a Barolo.
This is a favorite that we will be going back to for sure!!
Good Food, TERRIBLE service – Food was good (mushroom ravioli was awesome), but service was the worst. It was a 2-hour dinner for 4 people on a Wednesday night. After waiting 30 minutes for our drink order, 20 minutes later we still had no drinks despite the place being about 1/4 filled and the waitress was hanging out chatting at the bar. Our drink order? 3 glasses of wine. Seriously unbelievable. I had to finally flag down the manager and advised him that we'd like to get the show on the road at some point. We hadn't even ordered apps or our meal yet and it was almost an hour after being seated. After the manager was involved, we got the drinks within 5 minutes. I also had to find the waitress to get the check. I was a waitress for many years, so I know bad service when I see it. TERRIBLE SERVICE.
ESSC is Sensational! – WOW! Hit the spot in big way. East Side Social recently launched a new lunch menu and delivery service, and these guys really pulled it off!
Four of us left the office on a mundane Monday to grab a bite. All four came back with our natural 5 hour energy lift, and fat wallets retained. What else do you expect when you get homemade mozzarella, homemade bread, and home-’ground’ Kobe, all prepared by Devon Gilroy, the former sous-chef of Chanterelle and A Voce, and priced at a discount?
D – ‘Keep It Comin’ – Gilroy knows his stuff and the team running ESSC and its sister Macau knows how to deliver the goods!
The place has a really fun feel to it, good lighting, and a genuinely courteous staff. The menu kicks some butt! It has a great healthful variety to select from, and all the ingredients are fresh and the meat selections are “guilt free”, meaning the chicken are free range, and the cow grass fed - - no chemistry sets involved.
Among us we had the Caprese salad, with delicious mozzarella made by the chef himself, combined with grilled free range chicken ($13). The Sausage Piadina, a grilled pizza only an artisan could create, and nutritionist recommend ($11)! Cool Kobe, featuring a great grass fed cut, pounded by the man into paradise and cooked with “palate-tious” respect ($10)! Finally the Grilled Salmon, on the table we see a tenderly prepared fish, dressed with greens and yellows, and a wonderfully tasty Pesto, we all took our fair share of bites of what I think is the menu’s “piece de resistance” ($19).
On the flip side, they could improve the quality of the music, I’ll be speaking with them about that, or maybe just slip in my iPOD when no one’s lookin? And better signage on the outside, its unimpressive and doesn’t match ESSC’s awesomeness. Hey, so they got that wrong, but everything else right!
We’re all doing this again, there’s still soooo much more to try, and I hear they’re re-launching the dinner menu! I highly recommend ESSC, check it out, you’ll love it, and your friends will love you!
Goodfellas on the East Side – Growing up in a very Italian family, the cuisine is a weakness for me, but have very high expectations. I have to say, the food at East Side Social Club is superb. The entire staff is friendly and attentive without being hovering. The wood paneling, red checkered tablecloths, and oversized booths make me feel like I stepped into Sinatra's neighborhood spot. Make sure you save room for homemade cannolis.
Best Italian Meal in Midtown East! – East Side Social Club is one of the best restaurants I have been to in New York. The ambiance is exclusive with a down-to-earth kick, the drinks are incredible- must have one of their cocktails and the spagetti and meatballs is to die for! I would eat here everyday if I could
Best time in mid-town – A girlfriend and I made the journey above 14th street to see if this new joint lived up to the hype and we were pleasantly surprised to say the least. The bar had a nice little groove going at 6pm and there was still room to grab a stool before we ate. We tried a couple of the cocktails from the menu and both were exquisite. It’s clear the bar staff cares about quality and there’s a real artisan feel to their work. They clearly understand the cocktail culture but manage to pull it off without the attitude found at other cocktail spots in NYC.
Once we moved to the table we found the waiter to be knowledgeable, fun, friendly and attentive but professional. I had the veal chop and my girlfriend had the bucatini della nonna. It’s hard to believe from a new mid-town Italian hot-spot, but I have to honestly say that I have never had better veal in my life and the bucatini was amazing with just the right amount of spice.
We’re now planning regular trips to mid-town for more. Check this place out!
Avoid the drinks – I was happy with my meal but became WAY less enamoured when the bill came and our martinis were $17 each. Yes, I understand this is Manhattan. No, this is not the Peninsula or Tribeca Grand. To be honest, it's kind of a joke. On the plus side, the food was good. But I won't ever go back to this place - drink prices were slightly offensive.
An unexpectedly great meal – I was here with a friend last week and we chose the place mainly because it was near his office and the bar area looked fun. The bar was hopping and fun with lots of singles, as expected. But we were pleasantly surprised by the delicious dinner. We each had one of the home-made pasta dishes and they were superb. Our waitress was very nice and attentive without being intrusive. The atmosphere here is upscale but also warm and friendly. I'll definitely have dinner here again.
Citysearch Editorial Review – An old-school red sauce joint seems to have collided with a hip cocktail den at this Italian “social club,” where faded photos of the owners’ family line the walls--but this is no ordinary family-run restaurant. Chef Devon Gilroy (A Voce, Chanterelle) and his father Billy Gilroy (Employees Only) turn out handmade pastas, creative cocktails and house-smoked meats in a warm three-room space. And while red and white checkered tablecloths invoke Little Italy, mahogany wood walls and a sparkling chandelier are pure midtown.
