Hunan cuisine takes center stage in Flushing..
Hunan cuisine is known for being spicy--not surprising considering the province’s proximity to Sichuan; but don’t mistake it for being a one-trick pony, especially at this Flushing restaurant. Hunan House’s food, consisting of everything from a dish of smoky pork belly and leeks to braised pork and chestnuts (prepared “Mao’s style,” a reference to Hunan being the birthplace of Chairman Mao), gets high grades in the heat department while also scoring well for its many intriguing, well-balanced flavors. The clientele is made up mostly of local families and adventurous foodies, who come to sample the cuisine in the simple, elegant dining room decorated with modest chandeliers and a few paintings of serene mountain scenes.
