Virus-infested sputum. Waiters should not cough on food. I brought the matter of viral- infested sputum being sprayed on food and drink by the waiter to the manager's attention and was told it was my "prerogative" to inform the Health Department (I have exercised my prerogative). Fortunately the service was so slow I could leave before my food and drink arrived.

Best Brunch in the City!. I have been going to Steak Frites for a little over a year and it has the best brunch in the city! For $20 it's unlimited Bloody Mary's, Coffee, Tea, or Mimosas plus a delicious meal!

The Mussels are absolutely delicious as well with the option of four different broths and varieties.

The waitstaff is great, very attentive and not stuck up. The deal and the location (right down the street from union square) cannot be beat!

Enjoyable Meal!. Had the Jumbo Lump Maryland Crabcake for my starter and the Herb Roasted Australian Rack of Lamp for my main course. Both were delicious...great location also

Want to like, but..... We've lived in the hood close to 20 years, seen lots of restaurants come and go. This one came and went and came again. Its brief incarnation as Cafe Societe was dreadful and unsuccessful, so Steak Frites is back. It is not much better. If you stick with the "steak frite" (rib eye version) you'll be fine, though it it a very thin steak, it is flavorful and good - its hard to mess up a ribeye.

But if you want a cocktail, please come with low expectations. Over a few visits, all I can say is sad. You can order the same drink 3 times, and get three very different drinks. One night, we ordered two very different "house special" cocktails, they looked exactly the same (like pineapple juice) and tasted very odd. My husband braved another of the same, but his second tasted nothing like the first - but the 2nd time it did taste exactly like pineapple juice as well as look like it! I'm not even sure the bartenders here every went to bartending school, much less ever bartended professionally.

The organic chicken is bone dry and small. The salmon is dry. The frisee salad w/ lardons had about 3 chewy "lardons" in it. But the onion rings are good (though greasy, but that's what probably makes them good). Stick with the ribeye.

Looking around at the other diners, we get the impression they are not mixologists nor foodies. I guess this place fulfills a niche. We want to like it, and we want to support neightborhood places. But Steak Frites is very pedestrian on its best day. Its no Balthezar (though that is an overrated bistro also).

good for paries. The prix-fixe brunch was great and what they had was delicious. The best part about having a table of 18 with a limited menu is that you have at least one of every dish in your party. I tried the brioche french toast, which was delicious, but a bit too soggy in the center. I assumed that the benedict would be the most popular dish at the table, but steak and eggs seemed to take the lead.

Their béarnaise sauce was delicious and had a perfect amount of tarragon in it. . We ordered a side of bacon, which was perfectly crispy! They constantly refilled our glasses, and allowed us to stay a little over the 2 hour limit. I didn't come here expecting it to be earth shattering brunch, but left more impressed than I ever thought I would be.

Citysearch Editorial Review. This French bistro in Union Square sticks to classics like onion soup, mussels and--you guessed it--steak frites.

Extremely poor service!. Okay, i agree with the other users that i should've checked the reviews before going to the place but gees, who would've thought that it would be THAT bad. We were a party of 5, there for brunch on a Saturday, and was seated promptly upon arrival - the place was fairly empty, but maybe it was 'cause it was already past lunch time. Things were fine and dandy up until the point that some of us were brought the wrong dish or missing something on their dish. They brought out the wrong omlette dish and one of our plates were missing scrambled eggs. We brought it to the waiters attention immediately and we assumed that they were taking care of it in the kitchen. 20 minutes pass and NO EGGS! For goodness sakes, how long does it take to cook up an omelette and some scrambled eggs?? I was so disappointed at the service and of course, for whatever reason the waiter disappears everytime i'm looking for him. The manager comes over after the omelette and scrambled eggs for the other plate was served (meanwhile half of us are done with our food) and apologizes for the trouble and will take the steak off the bill. Now after all this trouble, i assumed that she meant that she will take one of the brunch plates off the bill (which is like a $16 value). The check comes and of course i'm double checking everything given that the service was so poor, who knows what else they can mess up on - and it didn't look like ANYTHING was taken off. I ask the waiter and he said that the manager adjusted the check to take $3 off. Wow, whoopy doo - i didn't argue with the waiter, and i just took the bill as is. Needless to say, i didn't tip him well - heck with that kind of service i shouldn't have tipped at ALL!

Oh and if anyone is wondering about the food - its nothing to rave about, as a matter of fact my steak was rather tough and the french fries were soggy! So much for the restaurant name huh? Can't even cook that correctly.

Just avoid the restaurant altogether.

the worst service i have ever had. I should have read the reviews before I went- so I guess it is my own fault. I have never in my entire life had such terrible serivce. I worked in food service for years, dine out very often and consider myself very patient and forgiving.

The food sounded and looked delicious - I just wish that my party was served any food or drinks to try. Even after asking multiple times for someone to take our order we were still left waiting. We noticed a number of other tables in the same situation we were. Ultimately I am glad - we wound up leaving and having a fantastic meal up the street.
