Tips for The Norry at Kampuchea

February 26, 2010

Citysearch Editorial Review. In a nod to the casual-dining trend, Ratha Chaupoly of Lower East Side stalwart Kampuchea annexed an adjacent space and converted it into an Asian-style pub serving flavorful Cambodia nibbles and cocktails. Instead of burgers and Tsingtao, the chic spot (subway-tile ceiling, forest-green walls, an interplay of rustic and gleaming wood) serves small plates as affordable as they are imaginative. Expect tamarind-glazed pork ribs, green-mango salad dotted with dried shrimp and numpang sandwiches, including oxtail with tamarind and honey served aside sweet-potato chips.

Exciting new cocktails and elevated pub grub.. The warm wood of the tables and ceiling was inviting on the cold blustery day I decided to give this addition to Kampuchea a try. I sat at the bar and was greeted by friendly and knowledgeable staff. They have an interesting drink menu, a throwback to prohibition era whiskey and gin based cocktails with an Asian twist. Several patrons were drinking the name sake cocktail the Norry with maker's mark, fig, and honey it is the perfect way to warm your chilled bones this winter. Also on hand is genuine Absinthe which after one sip turned me a little sideways.

The menu is just what the neighborhood ordered. The fried chicken which one may think generic is elevated to another level with a spiced salt that will wake up your senses. The grilled corn is a favorite from the Kampuchea menu which never disappoints. The Num Pang sandwiches are delicious and the soft, warm bread is just right.

I am sure that this will become a new early and late night favorite of the neighborhood.
