In Spanish, cartel means “poster.” It’s not too much of a stretch to think of this tiny sandwich shop as an interactive advertisement for Cuba: Sun and sea are represented by bright yellow trim and blue accents, as on the tiles that decorate the small counter. A giant white boom box adds to the retro feel. And then there’s the pork, that mainstay of island cuisine, roasted and topped with ham, cheese and garlic mustard, and nicknamed “el cubano”; dipped in egg and fried, it becomes a “cubano christo.” Each sandwich--there are beef, chicken and veggie options too--comes with potato or plantain chips, made on-site.
