So fresh, so goooood. I love the sushi here. It is so fresh and there are so many different varieties. The tempura is also amazing -it doesnt even taste like you're eating fried food. I totally recommend this place to anyone that likes Japanese.

Amazing Sushi. I love Dan Tempura House. Whenever I am on the Upper West Side and hungry I always make a stop at Dan Tempura House. The serivce is quick, the portions are large and the sushi is incredible. Defintley worth stopping by.

never again. Sticky tables, poor service and poor quality food. The norm at Dan Tempura…

My wife and I live in the immediate vicinity of this so-called restaurant. We never tried Dan Tempura because it is usually empty. Now we know why. Since we craved sushi and did not feel like walking, we decided to give it a try. I think we would have had a better dining experience if we bought a bag of nuts from a newspaper stand.

In this economy it is a shame that this establishment is taking business away from other more deserving restaurants.

Good, Inexpensive Japanese Food. This is a Lincoln Center restaurant I'll be returning to - an inexpensive (for New York) place with good Japanese food. The tempura was excellent - a good variety, and unlike many Japanese restaurants, not at all greasy - one of my first measures of a japanese restaurant. We ordered the dinner boxes ($18) with beef negamaki, california roll, tempura etc. We didn't order sushi other than the california roll, so can't uphold or dispute the comments other reviewers made - but if you are looking for good japanese food other than sushi, try this.

skip the sushi (and watch the check). I admit that we did NOT order tempura, which one hopes is much better than their sushi...easily the worst I've ever had in NY. The rolls contained tiny slivers of fish, and were so poorly-rolled that they were practically falling apart. Not cheap either. To top it off, they overcharged the tip to my credit card (as if 16% for a bad meal weren't enough). Sure it was likely accidental but that was just the icing on the cake. Spend your hard-earned money elsewhere. I certainly will.

Just Say No. In our search for a local sushi joint, we were really hoping we'd becoming locals at Dan's. Especially when we saw this sweet deal: $13 for 3 rolls. We'll never come back.

Forget the cramped seating and tacky decor. Let's talk about the fact that it took 30 minutes to get water, another 10 to get pre-made soup and salad and another 30 for the waiter to tell us that the sweet potatoes for our tempura roll were still being boiled. At this point, the waiter started avoiding our table as we clearly were getting annoyed.

So, ok... food comes. It was decent. The check comes... and it's $20 more than it should've been. (Keep in mind the waiter has now sent over someone else to do his dirty work).

End of story: after we told them they should comp our soup and salad, they did. So for $20 the two of us enjoyed spending our 1 hour wait figuring out which review site we should write in to first...

Luckily there was a Pinkberry across the street, so the night wasn't a total loss.

Pretty decent meals, service was not good.. The meals are good and they are reasonable. The service was slow. Not a very romantic place.

Reasonable price, but worst service. Food was OK, but the waitresses/waiters were untrained and rude. The first time we had a lunch there, the waitress dumped dishes onto our table. Not very Japanese style! But we were not so annoyed because it was the busiest hour of the day. The second time was worse, though. When we were waiting to be seated, a waiter passed us on the way to serve a table and yelled at us "get away get away!!" in very rude Japanese. I guess he couldn't see we understood Japanese very well. The restaurant manager, obviously Japanese, was there but didn't seem to care. Of course we walked out. We've never encountered such uneducated people serving in a restaurant in NYC!!! If you are still going to this restaurant, it's your choice- but please don't think this is the standard Japanese service.

Best Authentic Japanese on Upper West Side. The sushi and the hot entrees at Dan Tempura are the closest to authentic Japanese cuisine that I've found on the Upper West Side. DT consistently delivers fresh delicious food at an unbeatable value, and any lack of decor or service is more than compensated for by the truly delicious traditional Japanese food that is served. Hands down, the best Japanese food on the upper west side.
