Cool Gimmick.
I live a half block away and can say that this is definitely a welcome addition to the neighborhood. All the bars around are divey pubs which are great, but it is good to have a slightly classier bar option in the area.
What’s cool about Exchange is that its prices for drinks and bar food are based on a “stock market” mentality, meaning that prices at the bar will be based on demand. The prices are scrolled across a digital banner across the back wall of the bar, with impromptu announcements of a ‘reverse market’ designed to work in the crowd’s drinking favor. For example, everyone could band together to order a ‘round’ of the same item, and it would be cheaper for all as a result.
While I like the idea, that doesn't mean it necessarily translates into any great deals. When I was there Bud Lights were going for $5, Blue Moons for $6 and Stolis for $7, which are just regular prices. Of course that could change if everyone orders together strategically or if the market "crashes," but it does make me nervous to order say, 5 Bud Lights, only to find out come tab-time that I’ve paid between $4-$8 for each. I’m sorry, but I’m cheap, and I think I feel more comfortable with a set price. However, I’m also a gambler, so this does intrigue me. Anyway, it's worth checking out.
Best New Bar In Gramercy. This great new restaurant & bar in Gramercy has only been open for about a week and already I love it. In my opinion it's exactly what the neighborhood was in need of, a fun bar scene that's not a pub. The stock market theme is great to, it's the only time in my life that I keep my fingers crossed for a "Market Crash". The drinks are reasonable to begin with but when prices drop on the ticker above the bar, well there's a deal. I really enjoyed the burger as well, it was cooked just how I like it. I'll definitely be coming back with my friends.
