Couldn't be better.
by sistermagpie
I'd been wanting to get a tattoo for a while, but wanted to make sure I was going to a good place. Doing a search for something related I came on the many outstanding reviews for Studio 28 at Citysearch and went in to see them.
I couldn't have had a better experience. They made it easy to talk to them about my idea, and were great about explaining what would need to be adjusted--this was just what I was hoping for since I lack the practical knowledge to know how an idea would translate onto the skin.
Everything others have said about the space is true--very relaxed, very welcoming, and very very clean. The place is open and simple-looking--there's nothing to compete with the art being created.
The tattoo experience was good from start to finish. Paul Reynolds did a sketch, then some adjustments, and then went to work. As I admitted afterwards, while he was working (where I couldn't see) I prepared myself to be disappointed, thinking it couldn't look as nice as I imaged it. But the actual tattoo looked even better! The colors, the details--as my friend said when I showed it to them: OMG, that's perfect!
I'll be proud to recommend TJ, Paul and everyone at Studio 28 to anyone looking for the best!
Excellent Custom Tattoo Shop.

So my girlfriend and I were in NYC for about a week just to visit my high school buddies, and to show her where I grew up (We live in San Francisco). We knew we wanted to get an appointment for my lady to get tattooed in New York, as we both thoroughly enjoy some good body art, yet we were worried that we would not be able to get an appointment that fit within our timeline.
Thanks to C.J. and my artist from Studio 28, Paul Reynolds, they were not only able to consult her about her tattoo, and customize it to perfection, but they also helped me finalize a tattoo that is an homage to my baseball hero, Mickey Mantle.
My girlfriend's tattoo was a bit tricky for him to design, so he told us to come back the next day when they opened the shop (and that worked out great). In the mean time, Paul took my idea of a yankees cap on a skull, and transformed it into a masterpiece portrait of Mickey, half skull-faced, and half portrait. He drew it up within minutes, and 3 hours later, I had the most beautiful tattoo I couldve ever imagined.
Not only did he go the extra mile making mine look great, he did the exact same for my girlfriend. On top of the exceptional artwork, Paul is a really cool guy who is cool to talk to, and is a master with the tattoo gun.
I would highly recommend this shop to anyone who is considering getting a tattoo. I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Alex Alien, but C.J. and Paul, the two guys I did get to know, had great attitudes, and there is not one negative thing that I have to say. Overall great experience. I WILL be back soon.
An unexpected surprise - and a good one at that.

I'm new to NYC so I wanted to check out shops in a few different areas (Midtown, the Village, and a couple bouroughs). I headed into Studio 28 to discuss the last pieces to my half sleeve. While I had a few pieces in the space, they were smaller and left a large canvas. I met with TJ (owner) and Paul (artist) and had great converations with both. I was extremely surprised at the attitudes of these guys as I expected much less from a Midtown shop - I've never been so glad to be proved wrong. These guys care about the customer just as much, if not more than the artwork itself. They're looking out for your best interest with the work you want done. Even before discussing the specifics of the piece I wanted, I knew I would let these guys finish my arm.
Paul and I discussed a general idea but I gave him the green light to come up with his own design. When I went back for my first session I was stoked by what he had that day and also what he had in mind for the rest of the piece. We knocked out the first part in a few hours and are going to complete my arm in a few weeks.
As Paul is also new to the city, I wasn't even aware that he was at the shop, but I'm thrilled that he was. This guy's artwork speaks for itself, and he's a solid, stand-up guy on top of it. I would highly recommend these guys for any custom work (Alex, the other artist, is unreal as well).
Great Experience!!!

There is absolutely nothing bad to say about Studio 28!! The owner, TJ keeps that place spotless, is very prompt with returning calls or emails, and is very informative!!
Alex, my artist is great! He's patient, very focused, and has great ideas.
After spending the afternoon with these two starting a sleeve on my right arm, I would say after phase 1 I'll be heading back to studio 28 to not only finish my arm, but add to the rest of my blank canvas! I highly recommend steering away from the more "popular" shops in the city and trusting Studio 28!! THANKS GUYS!!
