Citysearch Editorial Review – For most people, Italian food means rusticity and tradition, which are the two least appropriate adjectives for this restaurant. Il Matto's design--teacup-shaped booths on wheels beneath a towering graffiti mural; unisex bathrooms that put men and women in shocking proximity, for example--is bizarre but no match for the cocktails (many contain veggies like radicchio, lettuce, or red pepper; one's made with solid ricotta cheese, another is cooled with rocks). Such strange libations could only be paired with scallops and foie-gras drizzled with caramel over cauliflower puree, or a creme brulee made with Pecorino cheese, though some items that appear eccentric, like a sea-urchin spaghetti, are actually traditional, if uncommon, Italian dishes.
