extremely rude!!. the burgers are great but the extremely rude door person will cross this place off of our list. Unfortunately it was a weekly stop for our family and a block away from our apt.
Great Burgers!.
It is so great and refreshing to have a great place to dine in this area. The area needed something new and Mel's has added to it. The service was great and my fiance loved the shakes.
Two thumbs up!
Great addition to the 'hood!.
Soooooooo happy to have Mel's right around the corner from me! Having lived on Amsterdam my whole life, it's nice to finally see something with a little style coming to our hood that's not just for the Columbia students.
I went with my fiancee and our 2 kids. First we got wings - DELICIOUS! More expensive than at some of the other neighborhood joints, but they give you a lot of food.
i decided to try the Fish Tacos, which were surprirsingly good for a non-Mexican restaurant. The fish was warm but the lettuce was cool and crunchy. They was a spicy creamy sauce which made it a little messy, but after the wings, I wasn't really worried about keeping my fingers clean lol!!
My fiancee got a burger combo, which came with fries and a beer. I can't remember the name of the burger, but it came out perfectly cooked and with fried onions and just the right amount of cheese. If you don't get the combo, the burgers are definitely more expensive than other neighborhood places that throw in fries for free...usually for around 7 or 8 bucks total.
They also have a kids menu but you have to ask for it... $5.95 for your standard kiddie food which is decent plus my kdis loved the big glowing sign in the back lol!
Overall we loved the music and the way the place looked and the food. We went early (5:30) so it wasn't packed out with students but I hear it turns into a bar-bar at night which I plan to avoid at all costs lol!!!! I would LOVE if they delivered, but we will definitely be back.
Disappointing...
My husband and I were psyched when Mel's opened up in the hood. We finally made it in tonight for a first meal at Mel's, and it was such a disappointment. The service was lacking - we waited 10 min just to get water (or acknowledged at all by a waiter), and this was at 6p on Saturday when it wasn't super busy yet. Waiters were standing around chatting by the bar, while customers got frustrated at their tables.
The burger was fine. A bit small for $11 (not including fries..) and nothing special. The salad was ridiculous. $14 for some shredded greens, a couple slices of chicken, and canned beets.. We did like the fries.. prob an ok spot for a late night of fries and beer at the end of the night. Def way overpriced for the slightly-better-than-McDonald's food, and the lame service.. BTW wasn't a prob for us, but they don't have a kids menu, which we heard complaints about from several of the families dining around us.. know before you go.
In any case, we won't bother going back for a while. They have a lot of kinks to work out!
Citysearch Editorial Profile. Columbia students and Upper West Siders rejoice! This Morningside Heights burger spot offers a refined but casual atmosphere and a menu that boasts seven different burgers (all made with grade-A quality Pat LaFrieda meat), sandwiches and other comfort food items, plus a variety of shakes and desserts. Add to that an outdoor patio, brunch menu and 18 different brews on tap (not to mention another 15 in cans and bottles), and Mel's has all the right campus-friendly ingredients for success.
