As everyone with a mouth is well-aware, fried chicken is wonderful and it may have just gotten even better. No, scientists did not find a way to erase the calories. Rather the folks at the Portland based Pok Pok Wing have begun adding Asian flare to the traditional Southern dish to wonderful effect. Inspired by traveling to Southeast Asia, these wings are doused in fish sauce and garlic, emitting a scent so wonderful it attracts New Yorkers from all boroughs (we have no proof of this). Other items include sticky rice, drinking vinegars, and Stumptown coffee served Thai-style with condensed milk.

Originally a cross-country expansion of Portland cult classic Pok Pok, this uncompromising Thai storefront is dedicated to pad thai. (A bigger, more ambitious Pok Pok is to be found in Brooklyn.) If you have come to think of pad thai as a bland, insipid dish -- and who could blame you given how it's made in New York -- you are in for an awakening. There are also some unpronounceable Thai dishes that are worth trying -- along with cold Thai beer.

Chef Andy Ricker has brought his PDX cool and hot Thai wings to the LES. Some sticky rice cools the tongue...and yes...they're local.
