An upscale Mexican lounge devoted to tequila and mezcal..
Named after the mythological Aztec goddess of agave, Mayahuel is Manhattan’s first serious cocktail bar dedicated to tequila and mezcal. Located on Curry Row, the bi-level locale is a looker: Glossy Mexican tiles, church-pew benches and exposed beams and brick define the downstairs; in the spacious upstairs, there’s a 20-foot-wide stained-glass chandelier shaped like a tarantula. Mixologist Philip Ward’s creations are equally deadly, including the bracingly aromatic Loop Tonic (white tequila, green chartreuse, celery bitters, vermouth); spicy Seco El Calor sangria; smoky Slynx; and tea-infused “tea-killa cocktails.” Nowhere else in New York will you sip such an eclectic array of cocktails starring the oft unfairly maligned tequila. Also, the romance factor is off the charts.
