Trattoria brings surprising elegance to small Soho space..
The rent must be great, since it's hard to imagine how any restaurant as small as Piccola Cucina (Italian for "little cookery") could possibly thrive with only 22 seats. In fact, the room is even tinier than its 22 seats would suggest, but somehow they also find room for a lovely bar, albeit with only three stools. But size aside, the place serves wholly authentic Italian food at pretty nice prices (pastas in the $15 range; entrees around $25). The room is cozily appointed with mirrored walls (to add illusory space), bottles, candles and various knick-nacks. Somehow, it all works.
