No need to go back
by NOK at Citysearch
I read good comments but I don't agree now.
The woman who cut my hair did not have good sense of styling and took longer than expected.
I am still unsure if she did not understand my requests as I am not familiar with Japanese language.
There are many Japanese hair salons in Manhattan. I won't need to go back to Akane.
- Pros: So so....
- Cons: Slow and difficult communication
Best place to get the 'trendiest' haircut
by Annjam at Citysearch
This place looks small and minimalistic, very Japanese... all the stylists have all their shears and combs tucked away in an ultra stylish pouch tied to their waist. My stylist was Noriko. She first sat me down and listened to exactly what I wanted. She will show you pictures and really understand your thought process. Then its time to get into a black robe and then to the shampoo station. Your stylist shampoos you. Even the shampooing was unlike any I have had , they even cover ur face so that you are not affected by the flourescent lights. Then she took me over to the station where she was going to cut my hair and took like 1 hour maybe more to give me a stylish , trendy , ultra modern bob. All this for $50 and then added tip. Maybe some of the senior stylists take more , I do not know. I saw men and young people geting their hair cuts there...I think atlast I have found 'my' salon. You have no idea how many places I tried but I never got exactly what I wanted. I have heard of Japanese people being stylish , trendy and so out there fashion wise...well even all the sylists are really trendy...THE BEST PLACE for a hair cut! Thank-you Noriko!
- Pros: stylist, cut, shampoo, price
- Cons: NONE at all
Great place for haircut

I had a great hair stylist in CA and was very nervous trying to find someone in NJ. I heard about Mina at Salon Akane and decided to give it a try. She is wonderful!! She took the time to listen to me and did exactly what I wanted. She is very easy to talk and very talented. I would recommend her highly for a great haircut!
- Pros: great haircut
- Cons: none so far
Consistent Haricut, Good Service

I've been going to Akane for a few years now and have tried most of their hairstylsts. They are all pretty solid. If it's your first time you can request for someone in particular (i.e. someone who cuts short or long hair very well, etc). Be forewarned that yes it is an all-Japanese staff and many of them are not particulary well-versed in the English language. Pluses are that they are perfectionists - they have spent 2 hours on a trim, 5 hours on a perm, etc etc. I go to Taka now, he's great. Make sure to make a reservation, without one it's a long wait.
- Pros: Great Service, Solid Haircut
Great cut - if you are willing to pay for it

hard to find a salon that cuts mens hair well but the akane stylists do the job nicely
stick with one stylist to establish continuity and call in advance to get an appointment
worth the money but if you like to get a fresh cut every three weeks i would find a local barber
