Let me save you the ANGER! – I am giving it one star because it does not give me the option of leaving no stars. I don't even know where to start. Dinner for six people, $400 with minimal drinks.
Sangria pitcher, which you will get 4 glasses, cost $35.
Nacho platter $12 - literally 20 nachos meant to be shared.
Service just flat out was non existent.
I have had better Mexican food at cafeteria in a hospital at Mexico night than this supposed expert fine dining in Mexican food. Really, no matter how you cook it, a Burrito is a Burrito, and $30 burrito is not worth it!
The plate leaves you hungry with literally the amount of rice I feed my 4 year old for a grown adult.
If you want overpriced average food with crappy service for about 90-100/per person with 1-2 drinks, then by all means you have found the perfect fine dining in Mexican food!
On the Border, a simple Mexican restaurant, outdoes this place without even trying and $250 cheaper!
Oh and the bathrooms were disgusting... but it was so dark in there, you can't see the urine stains.
bad food, ok service – The food needs a lot of improvement to say the least. The most blah mexican I ever had. The staff is okay but they are definately trained to get you to SPEND money. From the staff who kept asking if we wanted fresh guac to the way too loud mariachi band that went table to table. They make it hard for the staff to hear what you're saying.
Stay away from this place. There is way better mexican out there. Don't waste your money or time or stomach.
Not worth it! – This place is a rip off. I couldn't believe they charged us $13.00 for small portion of guacamole. We were tricked into buying it. The waitress asked us if we would like "some" guacamole, along with chips and salsa. To our dismay, we were charged for the guacamole---why didn't she mention this to us at first. Furthermore, the service was very poor considering there were few patrons that Sunday afternoon. The steak he ordered was over cooked, and fatty. They also mistakenly gave me someone else's dish , and the waitress came back few minutes later saying "so sorry that was not for you" Took it out of my hands while I was already eating , and waited another 20 minutes for them to bring out the correct dish. Very disappointing , which at that point, I lost my appetite. We complained to the manager, but he just apologized. My husband and I will never go back to this place!
I've seen better – The atmosphere is great, the service and food are sub-par. As hard as it is to find a good Mexican place on the East Coast, this place does no justice to even a taco stand. Try Taqueria in Jersey City, you can treat all of your friends with with the money you'd spend on two here.
Can't judge a book by its cover!!! – 6 of us went there for dinner and 6 of us were very dissapointed. The restaurant itself was beautiful but the service and food sucked.Small portions with bad flavor. The margaritas were good, but at $45 a pitcher it should be .All the reviews that I read were dead on about the service, food and especially the prices. The bill was absolutely shocking, they charge you for everything. The waiters walk around with tequilla and pour it in your mouth without asking and then charge you $11 dollards per shot. Also the guacamole is the best scam going, the ask you if you want it without telling you they cost $18 and its not even good. They did allow us to use the restroom for free, which was nice. Not worth it,and left hungry.
Do not ruin your night! Choose another place! – Saturday night we were all ready for a good time at mama mexico. We were seated on time, but had to wait for 20 minutes to see a menu. we were not served water for a while, we kept asking every wait staff member that passed us by till we finally got some water. The food got to the table 45 MINUTES after we ordered. it tasted horrible, the drinks were not good, either too much alcohol or not enough in the mix. The live music was nice most of the time, but about every other song was the happy birthday melody. we heard it maybe 25 times when we were there (we lost count after 20). You do not get what you pay for!!! When we complained they could not care less. If you value your money and your stomech and your chance of having a good time do not take your friends and loved ones there! Dont do it!
A fun, tasty, colorful night...no real complaints here... – Going out to eat is practically a hobby of mine. I've been to hole-in-the-wall places to ritzy places in NYC so I do have an idea of how restaurants should be.
I've been to the location in Midtown & last night in Englewood Cliffs, which is a much much larger and vivacious. The facility is gorgeous!! It's decorated with so much color and liveliness, you're happy just walking in the door.
On a Saturday night and without a reservation my party of 6 were seated quite promptly and it was far from being empty...
SO WHAT our server probably can't teach English- it is a MEXICAN restaurant people! But he certainly made no mistakes serving us. The staff were never rude and dishes were clean. They even redo the napkins when you step away from the table!
The food is DELICIOUS. And YES it is on the pricer side...but the quality and atmosphere (HELLO a live mariachi band every night! They don't get paid in tacos people) back up the price tag. And YES the margaritas were $10 - it was like all tequilla so it's not like it was just juice you're paying for.
AND I'd like to add that our party included "black" people so I have to argue with the previous review about racism.
My only quasi-complains is the unknown price for the table side prepared guacamole and confusion with our bill. It was supposed to be 18% gratuity included yet the server said tip wasn't included...
Definitely be alert to that, which people should be regardless. Oh and parking is not easy either.
SO TRY OUT MAMA MEXICO AND JUDGE IT FOR YOURSELF. IT'S CERTAINLY WORTH A VISIT; YOU'LL PROBABLY WANT TO RETURN!
Cheaters – The place is nice and food good but 1) service was not good. We had to say everything 3 times. (2) There were 9 of us and from the time we arrived we all noticed the menu indicated "18% gratuity included for 6 persons or more". When the bill came they included 20% gratuity and when we inquired, they said it was because there were 9 of us. It was good that my friend with us used to run a restaurant so she told them that this was wrong. (3) They charged us for a bottle of wine that we initially ordered and which we cancelled since they suggested that we order another bottle (could have been an honest mistake). (4) Two of our friends ordered the same food and we were charged $1 more than indicated on the menu. When they changed the bill, we shaved off $66 from the total. Can you believe that? Can you imagine if they overcharge $1 per table how much they would get? You can still eat there, just make sure you check your bill thoroughly!!
Never again. Here's the email I sent them:
To whom it may concern:
I write to express that after many years of frequenting your midtown establishment I was severely disappointed with my experience at your Englewood location. A friend and I arrived for dinner and upon being seated, the waitress asked if we desired guacamole, arranged for the guacamole and water, and then never came back. We waited a very long time, at least 20 minutes, making eye contact with her and with every other waiter in the vicinity, desiring to order drinks and appetizers, and no one came to us. Finally I flagged down a waiter serving the table next to us and we gave him our order. Nothing came. Twenty minutes later, I highly doubt it takes 20 minutes to refill water glasses and provide margaritas, after no further service, I flagged down a manager and expressed to him that no one wanted to take our order and no one wanted to serve our order either apparently, and perhaps it had something to do with the fact that we were the only black patrons in the area. During the approximately 40 minutes I just described at various points I observed several waiters standing around chatting it up and laughing amongst themselves, so no, the restaurant was not busy enough to justify the neglect. Furthermore, I observed those around us getting the level of service I would normally expect at a Mama Mexico establishment. Whatever the reason, I cannot and will not support an establishment where the staff think it is ok to treat black people as second class citizens. You have lost my business and you better believe that this is a story I will share with all friends and acquaintances and online restaurant sites and advise them not to frequent your establishment either. I was appalled and offended. Your manager tried his best to remedy the situation and after we complained we received service, but I should NOT have to make a scene to eat food. I walk in and I pay, that should be the end of story.
Mama Mexico (103rd Street, Manhattan) – this was my third visit here. My first was on a really, really bad blind date. I ended up leaving after only a drink, but I remembered the lively crowd and the colorful decor and knew I would return. I've now been two other times and my visits were consistent: great food and great service. I actually expected bad service my first time there because the place was packed and it was a while before the maitre 'd could acknowledge us, but my water glass was never empty, and the service was prompt, friendly and gracious. the food both times was flavorful, well prepared, and pleasing to the eye. I have worked for years in this industry at some of the best, highest zagat rated restaurants in NYC so I sometimes can have a critical eye, and I am happy to have found a place that, for at least the two times I've visited, has exceeded my expectations. I fully plan to return. I took my father who was visiting from Texas (we know our Mexican food) and he was blown away. ALSO: the place has a roaming mariachi bands (fun!) and seems to be a great place for large parties of adults but may not be the best place for kids who want to run around. it's loud (but not annoyingly so) and the tables are tight, but I still love the place.
