A Formidable West Coast Challenger – New York is a city obsessed with burgers. We have thousands of places that serve a slab of meat on a bun. From $.99 to over $100, it caters to a wide audience. While the West coast rules the “Burger World”, New York has come up with a formidable challenger in 5 Napkin Burger.
The standard 5 Napkin Burger is quite good and respectable, but the Burger for Two, which is made up of two short rib patties is monster. On a recent outing, one member from France said it was not only the largest burger he has ever had, but was made with the finest ingredients. He was shocked with not only the burger, but the Kobe hot dog, which started our meal.
The true test was the West coast “Dude” who is a burger expert. Put off by my suggestion that we go for the slab of meat on bread meal, he said “you really have nothing that can touch a good California burger”, which gave me food for thought. The Burger for Two changed all that. At the end of the meal he stated “I still think In-And-Out is better”, which put 5 Napkin Burger in the upper echelon of the burger world in my view.
Burgers are a personal thing, like art. Cezanne or Monet? It is really a matter of taste. The West coast group may choose the In-And-Out Double Double or the Wine Cask Kobe burger, but New York has a winner on its hands with 5 Napkin Burger. Great food, exciting setting with a super beer list.
Best in the world – Make sure you get the original burger!
Good Burgers! – Great Burger Restaurant.!! My boyfriend and I just saw HAIR and wanted to grab a bit and i saw it listed in the program, so i was like what they Heck! The Hostess was polite. She told us like a 10 min wait then like5 mins later we were being seated.I Had the Cheddar Burger Which was Yummy! and I had the berry Apricot Fizz Cocktail which was fizzy and good! He enjoyed it as well so that's always good! :)
Let's Just say Imma be coming back!
HAIR IN FOOD – Towards the end of our meal, my boyfriend found a long string of hair in his burger. The situation would not have been that bad had he found the hair before it got into his mouth but he didn't. It wasn't until he was chewing the food that he discovered the hair. The whole scene and HAIR grossed me out enough to send me to bathroom. I was so disgusted that I vomited. Needless to say, my boyfriend vomited at the restaurant and at one point on the way home. The manager offered to remove one burger of the bill until I complained that we didn't want to pay for any of the meal (especially since none of it was in our stomachs). In any case, the manager removed both burgers. I will NEVER go back to 5 Napkin Burger nor will I ever eat a burger again!
Juicy Fat Burgers – I see some reviews here don't seem to enjoy their burgers but I had a great time during my lunch here.
I have heard about 5 Napkin Burger for a while and have meant to try it but just never found the desire to travel all the way to 9th Ave. and 46th Street since I live in East Village. However, since I work near Javits Center and my boyfriend's new job is right on 42nd and 9th Ave, I think this might just be the perfect spot for our lunch date.
I made a reservation online for 12:30PM and when I arrived, the host quickly sat me down while I waited for my boyfriend to arrive. We both wanted to try their burgers. I got the Italian Turkey burger and he went for the Bacon cheddar burger. Our burgers were humongous! The Italian turkey burger is topped with mozzarella cheese, marinated pepper and Mariana sauce. The turkey patty is juicy and well seasoned. The burger is so big and heavy that the bottom bun is drenched and crushed! This makes eating a bit messy but I don't mind at all.
My boyfriend's bacon cheddar is great too. It is dripping sauce all over the plate and making a mess. Nonetheless, it is an amazing burger. Oh did I mention their fries?! They are addictive. You don't need extra salt and they are really crispy.
Both burgers cost about $12 each during lunch and about $1 to $2 more for dinner. They also offer the low carb option, which is burger salad (no bun). I saw a bunch of people ordering it and that might just be my next meal here!
what kind of burger joint sells sushi?? – the burgers here are just not what they are hyped up to be. i had the Original 5 Napkin Burger and the meat tasted ok but the whole thing fell apart along with the bun. maybe it's just a personal thing but that's one of my biggest pet peeves with burgers--when it's so oily/greasy and the bun is not made well so that everything falls apart and you end up scooping bits of burger into your mouth. i came back another time and tried the 5n dog--another mistake because it just wasn't the right combination of flavors and i ended up just eating a few of the elements separately. the cornmeal onion rings are also too starchy. the only good thing i had here was the black & white shake. maybe they should cut the sushi off the menu and just focus on making better burgers.
FAVORITE NYC RESTAURANT! – I very much recommend this place. Very polite and attentive service as well as the best burger in NYC. I'll definitely become a regular!!!!
horrible service – Had a reservation - told there was a 45 minute wait - an hour and a half later, we were seated at 2 separate booths, in 2 different sections. Party A ordered, got their food and was finished eating before Party B got their appetizers. The waitress was snotty about it. The manager was worse - he just kept explaining how food comes out at different times, etc etc etc and seemed annoyed that we were complaining . He offered us nothing - not a reduction in the bill, free dessert, nothing that good places do when there is a screw up. Will never be back - can spend my money in places that serve good food and can also take care of us. There are plenty of those in NYC.
Good for a late night – We came real late on Sunday night, probably 30 minutes before they closed, but the staff was very nice to us anyway, very quick and attentive. We offered to take our dessert to go when we saw them starting to clean up but the waiter insisted we stay. There were a few other stragglers there like us. Classic 5 Napkin burger was good, bun was great, only thing was a bit too much cheese but I lived through it and all in all very good. Banana cream pie also tasty. Liked the condiment spindle at the table, came with hot sauce, Grey Poupon, ketchup, etc. so you don't have to ask for every little thing. I would go back.
