A peaceful but tiny deluxe hotel. – The Scene
This hotel, owned by the Japanese Kitano Group, has a distinct, Zen-like feel, even though it's just four blocks south of Grand Central Station. Public spaces are sleek and contemporary, with rich wood paneling, marble floors and sculptures--Botero's Dog is the lobby centerpiece.
The 150 rooms offer a taste of both Eastern and Western cultures, with Asian-style suites providing a refreshing alternative to the Americanized rooms. A standout suite is the Tatami, with its own Tea Ceremony room and a Japanese-style bathroom, complete with wooden buckets and soaking tub. The restaurants include the Hakubai, serving Kaiseki cuisine, an intricate cuisine rooted in Zen Buddhism. The Garden Cafe offers contemporary American food in an airy and elegant setting. A complimentary limousine sweeps financial types down to Wall Street. Guests also receive free passes to the nearby New York Sports Club, which has exercise equipment as well as massage and physical therapy.
Horrible – Very disappointed with my Kitano experience and do not recommend them.
Definately not what I had anticipated – I booked a room at the Kitano for 6 nights, based on the review I read which ranked the Kitano 9.5 points. However, I checked out the day after I checked in. I definately was expecting better service, and value. The room was small, the furniture old and chipped. The linnen and couches had stains.
soundproof windows! – in nyc, soundproof windows are always a plus. There was no street noise even though we were just on the 4th floor. Room was very nice, marble bath, shisedio lotions and soaps, tea service in room. Bed was very comfortable with cushy pillows. Lights could be dimmed to make a nicer environment. High speed internet was $11 per night. They quickly removed telephone charges that were to busy numbers, we didn't even have to ask. Great value, nice location!
