The Scene
A manic energy gets you reeling with desire the
moment you enter. It's not that you see anything you want necessarily--but what if it's out there? And it's not that you have plans for Saturday night, but what if something comes up and you don't have a hand-beaded camisole? Thoughts like these enter your consciousness just before the shoving begins. Something about the pulsing squeal of techno-pop and dizzying swirls of silk blouses makes shopping here feel like a competitive sport.
The Goods
Brightly colored sandals, enormous beaded handbags, slippery lingerie, work-worthy shirts, pants and skirts, candles, gilded home accessories and pretentious baby attire await--designer-produced and otherwise, with brands like Patricia Pepe and Joseph A. predominating. With very little effort, you can leave with a quirky looking stretch top or a handsome pair of boots for under $100.

You can get great stuff for cut rate prices here. Work clothes and casual wear and even formal wear are covered in wide selections. You don't necessarily get much staff attention, but that isn't so bad.

My wife and I spent a recent Saturday combing the racks at Daffy's for baby clothes and were impressed by both the selection and prices (especially on clearance items). It should be noted that shopping at Daffy's takes patience--the store was rather messy and sizes weren't always properly marked. Our biggest find came among the baby shoes, where we picked up a pair of $30 sandals that were selling in Park Slope boutique shops for more than twice that amount.

No-Man's Land:
Skip the men's wear section, where the goods are mediocre and the selection is small.
Crush Hour:
Don't go during the week if it's lunch hour. Workers from every conceivable office congregate in the aisles. First thing in the morning, however, the store can be all yours.
