West Chelsea Mediterranean that's a boon to the neighborhood.. The Scene
The dearth of decent restaurants around FIT has allowed Gus' Figs a certain renown. Lunchtime in particular draws a surfeit of professors, who seem to be able to set aside their sense of aesthetics where the drab interior is concerned. It's less crowded at night, so eat early or risk dining in desolation.

The Food
A broad French, Italian and Greek menu (hence the acronym, FIG) is offered. Entrees, like the clay-potted chicken swimming with figs and apricots, and the kakavia, a saffron-infused seafood stew, are quite good. Most notable are the homemade desserts--one taste of the ravani (almond semolina cake) and you'll be packing your bags for Athens. Appetizers, like overcooked grilled octopus atop an otherwise tasty mound of quinoa and shaved fennel, and a generic trio of traditional Hellenic salads--creamy taramosalata and tzatziki and a smoky roasted eggplant--are less satisfying.

Great Food, Great Value. I work in the area, and there are hardly and decent restaurants-- except for Figs. It is a hidden gem.

The greek salad is fabulous, along with the stuffed grape leaves and mussel appetizer. The price is amazing for the quality of food!

A must try!

Mediterranean Gem near FIT. Went there with a friend, we shared appetizers, and lots of them, because it was just too difficult to choose from this menu! What a tempting selection, and the seafood was really great. Attentive service and nice ambience contributed to a great "girl's night out"! Will be back.
