The Scene
There's nothing fancy about this small soul food spot near Madison Square Garden--which the pre-event crowd and older regulars think is just fine. The tables are few, the carpet is industrial grade and the food is served cafeteria-style, making it all the easier to concentrate on.
The Food
Strangely, the side dishes are the main attraction. The creamy mac and cheese eschews the exotic gourmet cheese trend and proves that sometimes simple is better. The juicy green beans have an irresistible smoky barbecue taste. Of course, along with two sides, diners also get to choose an entree. The massive hunk of meatloaf is mixed with savory onions and topped with a cloyingly sweet sauce, while the flaky catfish is thickly breaded and a bit heavy on the salt. Having dessert first isn't a bad idea--the sweet potato pie is a velvety, cinnamon-infused pleasure.
Hits: The sides--including the mac and cheese, collard greens, stewed okra, string beans, mashed potatoes and more--are exceptional.
Misses: The atmosphere is a bit drab, meaning you'll want to scarf down your considerable meal and then split.

When it comes to finding soul food, Soul Fixins fills the Garment District void. The service is great, friendly chefs and servers. The place is small and too bad there's no park nearby to sit & eat. The food is good, though definitely no-frills. No hoopin and hollerin over finding out the recipe, and the portion of BBQ chicken was a little on the skimpy side. I would go back again, though, since it's close to me and I cannot find food like this (for this price and short wait time) in this area.

This Place worth traveing from Italy to NYC. Fried Chicken was great, Mashed potatoes and gravy perfect (not waterish at all) Soundtrack UNIQUE! My fiance has understood what Soul Food Means! After 15 months we get back here to have a lunch. GREAT! as always. Fried chicken, melting BBQ ribs,. #1! P.s. Great music too!
