What People Are Saying About Kum Gang San

Featured Review

Featuring a roaring two-story waterfall with a white baby grand piano on top and an eat-in cave below, as well as big-screen TVs, a sushi bar and an occasional bamboo flutist, Kum Gang San overloads your senses before you sit down. Mini-barbecues in the center of each table allow hands-on diners to grill their own meals to perfection. Try a bottle of soju, potent and sweet Korean rice wine, with the finely marinated seafood combination, a mix of lobster, squid, shrimp, scallops and clams, or grill up some bulgogi.

Editor's Tips

When to Go:
Kum Gang San makes a fine late-night (or early morning) follow-up to dancing at Club Shelter.
ambiance
62.820000648498535% positive
  1. Alternatives- for inexpensive vegetarian Korean try Cho Dang Gol (55W 33rd), for nice serene atmosphere try HanGawi (12 E. 32nd), other good bets- Woo Lae Oak (148 Mercer), or Yangpyun (43W 33rd).
  2. We used to come here, both as a couple and in a group, and it was always fun - an experience - not rushed, food decent, service not great, but okay.
  3. Rude service, cafeteria like atmosphere, mediocre food- much better alternatives available.
  4. It has a nice decor, and you are paying for it.
  5. The complimentary appetizers were very good, though I'm still trying to figure out if one of them was snail or not LOL The table BBQ was fun, especially for two aspiring chefs.
  6. Love the decor too.
  7. Kum Gan San is famous for having really great food, ambience and the greatest Korean BBQ ever!
  8. The atmosphere at KumGang San- bright light, crowed wide open spaces, and all you can hear is the clamoring of plates and the din of conversations- very cafeteria like.
  9. This restaurant is enjoyable for the decor only.
  10. don't see this as a romantic place.
  11. The Manhattan location seems to be following because the food isn't nearly as great as the other places.
  12. when this restaurant first opened in Flushing Queens, it was definitely the place to go to but the chef moved to Manhattan and the Queens location wasn't as great.
  13. The only down side is the service is usually horrible when it's busy, and the decor is a bit cheesy with a big screen tv in back and a waterfall in front.

  1. Service is great but, the bill tends to run high at the end of the night, especially if you've had drinks with your meal.
  2. cocktails are not that great.

  1. We used to come here, both as a couple and in a group, and it was always fun - an experience - not rushed, food decent, service not great, but okay.
  2. The Shumai appetizer (which came AFTER the main course food) sucked.
  3. Good food
  4. ive gone to this restaurant on a number of occassions, and while i think the food is generally consistent, i was appalled at the sometimes rude service and even ruder manager.
  5. Even though the Kum Gang San in Flushing is better, the restaurant in NYC is still consistantly tasty and better than a lot of other places.
  6. The dumpling soup was bracingly superb and the seafood scallion pancakes are a must.
  7. Good point: the "banchan" or the side dishes are great.
  8. gop dol bimabap; tofu jigae, etc.) Great place to get a quick and filling meal.
  9. The Kalbi Tang (beef short ribs in broth) and Neng Myun (cold buckwheat noodles in soup) are my favorites here.
  10. The food is a little expensive and I would avoide the sushi.
  11. The food was delicious and worth being treated like second class citizens.
  12. Some folks believe this place is spotty in service and in food, but there is no denying the scene is very nice.
  13. The Manhattan location seems to be following because the food isn't nearly as great as the other places.
  14. The little side dishes are delicious.
  15. The food was great but the portions definitely small.
  16. Been here a couple times and I had to admit, as much as I love Korean food, this place doesn't do it for me.
  17. Unfortunately the meal was very disappointing.
  18. My personal favorite here is the dak bul gui, however the sizzling rice bowls are enticing as well and if you're into noodles try the Jap che.
  19. Kum Gang has delicious Kim Chi pancake but, unfortunately it took a half hour to get to our table.
  20. With a variety of dishes to try from, the food is usually pretty good.
  21. Beef tar tar styled Korean dish arrived at my table in a cold metal bowl and I realized I had made a mistake.
  22. This is a great place for people who have never eaten Korean food and want the experience or for someone who loves Korean food and knows what the deal is.
  23. If you don't mind dropping $60-$70 in 20 minutes flat for so-so food, this is your place.
  24. The kim chi dishes are tasty and good.
  25. However, still the food was excellent and had a great time.
  26. It is my favorite dish.
  27. Rude service, cafeteria like atmosphere, mediocre food- much better alternatives available.
  28. If you skip the Bimi Bop rice, which is delicious, and choose the meats, the condiments and the lettuce, you have yourself once hell of an Atkins meal.
  29. If you like meat, try kalbi or bulgoki (make it yourself at your table).
  30. Seated in the upstairs part of the restaurant my party and I were subjected to rude, abrupt service and unmercifully long waits for our food.
  31. Service is great but, the bill tends to run high at the end of the night, especially if you've had drinks with your meal.
  32. The food isn't bad but there are simply places in the area that prepare it better and for cheaper prices.
  33. If you like soups, there are plenty to choose from; aljigae is great if it's cold out and if you like caviar (but it's hot as hell, be warned).
  34. For better food, friendlier service, and a more authentic korean experience, i highly recommend Kunjip restaurant, further down the block near fifth ave.
  35. My advice - if you're looking for overpriced korean food, just go to the restaurant across the street.
  36. reccomend the Plum Wine, very tasty and goes excellent with the food.
  37. Try something different, you will be glad you did, as the food is really wonderful.
  38. Kum Gan San is famous for having really great food, ambience and the greatest Korean BBQ ever!
  39. This place has very good food, but was a bit pricey, for two people the total was over $75.
  40. While I picked a fairly safe dish, my companion selected something the waitress noted "Americans usually don't order," and soon found out why.
  41. Good food but quite expensive!
  42. The vegetable mandoo (fried) is a great appetizer, as well as the pajun pancake.
  43. The kimchee is also yummy!
  44. Recently while having dinner at KumGang San I was hoping to enjoy a dish of Bim Bim Bop in hot stoneware.

Highly anticipated but disappointed

by duffernine at Citysearch

All restaurant guides point to this place and they couldn't be more wrong. I was prepared to be rushed out since they like to turn over the tables very quickly, but for a Tuesday night it wasn't crowded and they didn't push us through the meal. Unfortunately the meal was very disappointing. The Pa Jun appetizer (scallion pancake) was bland, the shrimp tempura was too crusty, and the BBQ kalbi dinner portion was small and ordinary. Not to mention we had to ask for more rice with our meal. Lastly, the side dishes were minimal at best and no kimchi at all. I've been to other Korean places, most notably Kang Suh in Yonkers, and they were so much better. The hosts were polite but that was about it. I do not plan on revisiting this location.

  • Pros: nice atmosphere
  • Cons: slow service, small portions

Despite bad reviews, I actually enjoyed it!

by pleslie at Citysearch

I loved this restaurant. My friends and I (group of 7) decided to have a late dinner around 11 P.M., but service was great. Others have put bad reviews for service, but that must be during busy times. We came at an odd hour so it wasn't crowded. You would expect food to be bad during slow hours but it was actually great. I would love to taste their food during busy hours. Definitely try the Kal Bi and special beef (? that's what I heard them call it). It was DELICIOUS! We ordered about 7 orders of the beef barbeque. I love the fact they are 24/7. It's a great place to dine after a night out with friends.

WHO DOES THAT?

by langdonulger at Citysearch

The food is okay, but overpriced and if you're not korean they're not as nice to you. I used to not mind that much, but after the terrible service I received the last time i went, i will NEVER go back. I went there in a birthday group of ten people. The waitress was rude, but we thought whatever, it's a busy night, who cares? After the meal, some of the group was already downstairs and outside, while the rest of us settled the bill. We put the money on the table and were about to leave when the waitress STOPPED US. She said we had to wait there - that we could not leave - until she had counted out the money we left. I was absolutely STUNNED, and then extremely angry at her rudeness in suggesting that we would try to dine and dash. (it's not like we were a group of teenagers who wouldn't have enough money. we're freakin twenty something asian bankers.) She counted the money painstakingly slow in front of everybody in the restaurant and then bid us a facetiously nice goodbye when she realized we had left her an $80 tip. Afterwards, my friend tried to complain to the manager on duty, but he pretended to not speak english!

My advice - if you're looking for overpriced korean food, just go to the restaurant across the street. their bulgogi is better anyways.

  • Pros: Nice hostess
  • Cons: Horrible waitresses
