Watcha got in the bag, kid...wanna hand it over...New York may be safer than it was, but streetwise and savvy will always be survival skills here, especially for kids, and Prepare gives them a lot of what they need to know in a collective and supportive atmosphere. It's not about teaching kids elaborate kung-fu stances but how to protect themselves and their space in a range of potentially threatening situations, from schoolyard bullies to street punks to enticers. Non-physical defenses are stressed, but the classes are realistic enough to know that words sometimes need backup. The only downside is that it's not that cheap, about $150 for two afternoon sessions, and it would be great if they could have outreach into the public schools, but at the demonstration it was clear that the kids in the class (my daughter included) came away a little better to deal with the big, bad wolf than when they went in. Very down to earth, real and useful. No matter how much Times Square gets Disneyfied this town ain't never going to be so safe that these skills aren't vital. Highly recommended.
