It doesn't have to be so hard or pompous. – The school pompously proclaims itself as "The Harvard of Massage Schools", probably to feel better about what they are. The profession of a masseuse will never be anything that glorious or respected, there are tons of unlicensed people who do it just as good as the ones who went to SI. I am not even talking about the perverted associations of the public and sexual context to the "profession". Most of LMTs including our teachers are ashamed to admit to be masseuses for their entire life, saying they are "alternative health care"professionals :) Even after 1,5 year and $22 000+ to get a license, everywhere you go you will be expected to provide sexual service and the owner of the spa will tell you with a grin that what you do with the client is your own business.
This job is HARD, physically deteriorating, UN-respected and low-class.
I just mean that there is nothing to be so conceited about teaching that. Yes they offer decent quality education but it's nothing extraordinary. Most of the teachers there are old sad people dissatisfied with their lives, carrying injuries after years of massaging other peoples backs, angry at the world. A teacher once came up to me and kicked my leg because i closed my eyes at the lesson.
Most of the students work for the tuition and they won't even let you come with a coffee in the morning. The ACs were crazy, i'd get sick every week while studying there and they will only allow for 4 absences. There was a ton of other things. It REALLY doesn't have to be that hard.
And so that no one will think all this irritation is because dropped out or that i'm dim or that i didn't study enough: i was a successful massage therapist in my country and here, bought a simulation National Exam on the 2nd semester and was getting 80% every time but i couldn't pass Neurology or something because i prepared for the final from wikipedia. I love wikipedia and hate printouts which they gave. The info on printouts was old and i didn't get the answers right, it was the last drop, transferred to a different school.
Don't be a student of the Swedish Institute Acupuncture program – The acupuncture program at the swedish institute is a joke. I am a dissatisfied student. I would not recommend the school to interested prospective students. The school has rigid policies in place and makes it very difficult to graduate on time. In the last year there have been 3 different deans. It is a disorganized mess. Some of the teachers are great, Jeffrey Yuen is unbelievably gifted and an excellent teacher. The administration is full of jerks who don't know what they are doing. Don't choose swedish. Do your research before you enroll in school. make sure to speak with current students to see if they are happy with their choice. The school may face lawsuits brought on by students in the near future. Newly enrolled students are wishing they had attended different schools. The school may be circling the drain. Consider yourself warned. Go to PCOM or Tristate. Or look out of state. The swedish institute is full of false promises. You might not be taught daoist medicine or classical acupuncture at a TCM school, but you can always dedicate yourself to daoist/classical chinese medicine via a doctorate program or by taking post graduate courses with Jeffrey Yuen. There are a lot of schools out there so choose wisely.
