Editorial Review for TG-170 – by Rebecca Braverman
The Scene
Ludlow Street's TG-170 (TG for Terri Gillis, the store's owner, 170 for the address) has a storefront that's pretty spacious by Manhattan standards, probably because it's been on the block since way back when--remember, when the L.E.S. seemed sort of sketchy? Low-key shop girls let you browse without breathing down your neck, but they'll offer advice if you need it. Overheard on our visit: "No, your ass will look good in these pants!"
The Goods
Gillis has an uncanny knack for picking up the next big thing. Many designers seen here first end up at Barneys later. Look for downtown essentials like well-cut jeans and fancy tops from key players like Rebecca Taylor and United Bamboo. The biggest selection of hipster staple Freitag bags is here, and don't forget a Votivo red currant candle so your closet can smell as yummy as the store.

TG170 has everything I want to be wearing. The selection is the best in the lower east side. Although there isn't much for a plus sized girl, TG170 carries more larger sizes then your average boutique. The store is organized beautifully. The staff is sweet and helpful, but do not rely upon them for an honest opinion as to whether or not you look like a fat sausage stuffed into those adorable Built by Wendy cords. Expect to pay a pretty penny for all the creative, locally designed clothes you can find there. If you're on the broke side of things, check out the huge bins of last years stuff in the back. A little digging can fetch you quite a bargain.
