A house of curiosities with enough satisfactions to kill a cat. – Overview
Also known as El Museo Loco, this institution is a welcome revival of the nearly extinct dime museum. As such, you'll get a double sense of wonder as you step inside anachronism to gawk at queer treasures from an even earlier era. Somehow it works, because you no longer need to be fooled by the Feejee Mermaid--a monkey stitched onto a fish--to enjoy her.
Features and Attractions
One wall is covered with vintage photos (in their original frames) of such human marvels as the Wild Men of Borneo. In a glass case below, you'll spot an assortment of penile bones. What else do you want to see? Sammy Davis, Jr.'s glass eye? Tom Thumb's boot? A mummified cat? You've got 'em. This is the one place in NYC besides the American Museum of Natural History where you can see a real shrunken human head; one-upping that stately institution, the Freakatorium also has a live two-headed turtle paddling about its aquarium.
