“Cool little cake place.”
“The jam filled sandwich cookies are always a big hit.”
“Friday Night and the service was bad”
“All of you who think that place is great and are willing to put up with stale cakes, high prices, and rude service go.”
This small specialty shop in the East Village isn't much to look at, but it's generally agreed that it produces some of the most intense chocolate desserts in town. Primarily, it's a cake shop, and indeed, it's hard to pick one cake from another in order of preference -- they're all made on an equally high level. But I find myself stopping in for a handful of truffles, the traditional soft, cocoa powder-rolled kind. They're a perfect treat, and ideal if you are not up to eating a whole cake.
YUCK!!! YUCK!!! YUCK!!!.
I thought with all the good reviews I've read here, I'd give this place another chance. BIG MISTAKE!
Since everyone says how fabulous the busy bee cake is, I gave that one a try. DOUBLE YUCK!
I should have known it was stale because of the cracks on top of it, but was reasured it was fresh that day.
I hate to be lied to.
I will never step in that store again and will tell my friends to stay clear of the BLACK HOUND.
I made the disasterous being dragged back to this horrible place again by some friends. This time I got the triple cokolate moose cake which was not too bad.. My friends bought a black rasberry cake that was dry as a bone. I tried to steer them away from it since the chocolate around the looked like it was turning a little white which meant it was old. Yikes, I'd rather eat saw dust than ever eat the chocolate rasberry.
I won't even go into customer service except to say they act as if they're doing you a favor to wait on you.
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER AGAIN!!!!!
All of you who think that place is great and are willing to put up with stale cakes, high prices, and rude service go. I'll bake my own stuff, thank you very much!
Best carrot cake!. I ordered a carrot cake from Black Hound Bakery for my mother's 72nd birthday last year and she absolutely loved it! I live in Atlanta and she is in a very small town in Kentucky- so small that I worried about the delivery of the cake. However, the cake arrived on time and (from the pictures my other family members sent) it was absolutely beautiful! Carrot cake is my mother's favorite and according to her this was by far the best she's ever had! I spoke with someone from the bakery (Debbie?) before delivery and she couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. I just placed another order for a strawberry cake today and I'm sure it will be delicious also! If you're thinking about sending a cake to someone, I highly reccommend the Black Hound Bakery.
Editorial Review by Citysearch Editors. Upscale bakery specializes in all-occasion cakes, notably the chocolate "Busy Bee," savories, cookies, truffles, sauces, hot chocolate and coffee drinks.
Rude Employees.
My orders were not ready when they were supposed to be and the truffles were not what I expected.
I had placed an order a week ago and today it was not ready, even though I called in yesterday to remind them. The truffles were completely different from the samples I was given and no one seemed to know why, or be able to offer me an explanation for the sudden change. They proceeded to give us the desserts that were on display. Never once did they apologize for the inconvenience. In fact they noted that I was trying to be "cheap" when choosing the truffles so they were doing me a favor by giving me extra bags. I only hope that when I pick up the THREE large cakes that I also ordered, they will be boxed, resemble what I wanted and are freshly prepared.
Cool place. Cool little cake place. Everything here is brown, hip, fun and solid if not above average cakes. Pretty people and Takehome bakery service to go, too."
Not run of the mill cookies.
The cakes are a no brainer- fabulous. The Lemon Orange Teacake, The Chocolate Raspberry and The Queen D (hazelnut!) are superb. Good mousse.
The cookies here are not big chewy chocolate chip or oatmeal affairs, but butter cookies and not super sweet-interesting flavors like like anise and chocolate with a teeny bit of black pepper. They do a nice ginger snap. The jam filled sandwich cookies are always a big hit.. They have tasty cheesesticks and another savory with olive paste thats excellent. Their chocolate berry basket is a spectacular dessert -almond cake, candied almonds, pastry cream , fresh whipped cream all topped with fresh berries INSIDE a dark chocolate basket. Not cheap here but you can taste quaility ingredients and skill, so it's a good value. People are nice-may get a little frazzled at peak times and holidays
Desserts to die for. OK, so the service at Blackhound isn't stellar. But it's not really bad, either.... I've been going there forever and granted, there's only one staff member who's overwhelmingly nice, the rest are just average, which is really fine. That doesn't detract from the fact that Blackhound has the most unbelievable desserts in NYC. It's a pattiserie, NOT a Veneiro's-type Italian joint, and everything (believe me, I've tried it all) is UNBELIEVABLE. The smartest thing they do is display their desserts in the windows, because they look as good as they taste. I adore Blackhound and I guarantee that you will too. aT $6 a pop, Their mini-cakes are perfect birthday gifts.
Friday Night and the service was bad. love black hound cookies but the service really puts you in a mood - a bad one!
I Love Black Hound :0). After walking past this bakery and salivating every time i finally stopped in. The free samples were wonderful and choosing from the beautiful mini cakes was quite a task. The mini cakes r easily shared for a delicious and inexpensive dessert. I found the staff to be very friendly and attentive.
