What Our Expert Scouts Say

It looks too modern to be old, but in fact this is one of the oldest bars in New York; it's been refurbished, but the ghosts are still there, along with the steak and shrimp cocktail.

11 year old girl's opinion. Hello fellow New yorkers. I am an 11 year old girl who has gone to knickerbocker so many times before but the most recent time I went was a disaster... My mother, Grandmother, and I went to knickerbocker recently. We had a horrible time. First of all there was a long line of people and we had reservations My grandmother could hardly stand up anymore (she is old and diabetic) so we asked for a seat. Other people that came into the restaurant after us had already been seated. We asked the owner for a table and he exploded into a fit of yelling and all we did was ask politely for a table. My Mother felt very insulted and like any other person would do she told him we were never coming back. His reply back was "What do i care". We then left feeling very sorry for anybody who has ever had to deal with him. We also left with mad empty stomachs.

What once was good..... Sadly Knickerbocker was once a community restaurant . Now it is a tourist trap. It is loud, has unfriendly service and barely adequate food at expensive prices. This is a restaurant that caters to tourists and lives on a reputation that at best once was. As banks and CVS take over our beautiful city this restaurant too has lost its appeal and has became drab lacikng in personality and quality. The owner of Knickerbocker is a strange dude. He is mean and surly. I am sure if you go to this restaurant you will not be satisfied. DO NOT GO TO KNICKERBOCKER BAR AND GRILL!!!!!

Super Rude Staff. The headwaiter used F-WORDS on customers - CAN YOU BELIEVED IT? It happened on October 15, 2011 at 8:40 pm in front of four friends of mine! I have been living in New York for 15 years but can't remember anything like this!

Great Food and Cheerful Atmosphere. While visiting New York, our son took us to this restaurant because we were all hungry for steaks. The waitress was up-beat and efficient and made us feel at home. She answered all our questions and served hot delicious food in timely manner.

We will definitely return there when we visit our son next time. The sweet potatoes were especially good and the steaks done to perfection.

The service was delivered with cheer and a great attitude.

Spotty service-problems up front. I'm a native New Yorker and have been exposed to all types of people standing guard at the front of restaurants. This one is ruined by a strange, cold, weirdly disconnect person who should try another line of work. I've gone here many times, The food can be good, but the service is spotty. My main dishes once came out with my appetizer and they thought I would eat them twenty minutes later under heat lamps. This week I went three times and was told I couldn't eat because one person in the party was delayed in traffic.

I truly don't like to respond to comments made on site like this, but this review is really unfair. If food was ever sent out in an untimely manner, we would make a fresh dish, not keep it under heat lamps, especially if it was our fault. We have never refused to serve a patron, because of an incomplete party, it doesn't make sense! And though I am glad for our repeat customers, I am confused as to why you would come 3 times in a week, if the place is so bad. I would greatly appreciate it if you would voice your concerns to management, as an owner is usually on the premise.

UNFRIENDLY SERVICE RUINED AN ALREADY DISAPPOINTING MEAL.. UNFRIENDLY SERVICE RUINED AN ALREADY DISAPPOINTING MEAL.

My boyfriend had read excellent reviews about this place and decided to take me there for my birthday. This is not the place for a special night out, the atmosphere is old and stodgy . Our waitress was unfriendly ( If I didn't know any better I would say she has a problem serving minorities ). When we asked her to store our bags while we ate dinner she placed our bags next to the bathroom on top of a dirty mop. The kitchen may have been having an off day, but everything we ordered from the stale bread, the tasteless salmon croquettes, to the chewy T bone steak was bland.

When I mentioned to the waitress that we were a bit disappointed with the quality of our meal she shrugged her shoulders and said " everyone else here likes it, so that's too bad for you". She then proceeded to go to the other wait staff and literally pointed at our table while gossiping

If you like flavorful food and good service stay away. BEWARE OF LESS THAN FRIENDLY SERVICE.

This place might be an institution but it missed the mark. If you are looking for decent steak and good service there are plenty of other great establishments in NYC to visit.

Great neighborhood restaurant and steak house in one. The "Knick" has been a village standard for decades able to combine a young crowd, the occasional celebrity and older village regulars comfortably. It's T-Bone steaks (order one for two) are as good as the top steak houses in New York, and about half the price. The rest of the menu has been constantly improving with a new chef. Lots of good wine selections for $45 or less. Jazz on Fridays and Saturdays adds a lot

Reliable and Comfortable. Knickerbocker is my go-to place for special occasions with small groups. The bistro is always a good bet when you want a quick bite and the regular staff are always friendly. You'll never leave hungry and the deserts and great too!

DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!!!. This is a true story that happened on Valentines Day. I took my daughter to Knickerbocker for dinner. We had 5:30 reservations and were seated upon arrival. That was the only part of our dinning experience that went well! Within 5 minutes of sitting down the owner started screaming at the wait staff; first about a table not being set and then about time cards. He was screaming in the middle of the dinning room?not what you want to listen to during a fine dinning experience. We both order the T-Bones and requested them ?medium.? About thirty minutes later, the steaks arrived and were served rare?.a purple center. I requested that the steaks be sent back and cooked properly. I know the difference between very rare and a nice pink medium. The owner came over to our table and accused me ( in a very loud tone) of not knowing what medium was and said that when I got my steaks back there would be no pink in the meat. The owner was so rude that my daughter started crying and I decided to leave.

Please DO NOT reward an owner that treats his customers like we were treated. He ruined a very special day with my daughter. They are many fine steaks houses in New York. Please take this one off you list of establishments to visit.
