Eaten alive by bugs!. Caution: I went to Chat n Chew in September, and my foot was practically EATEN ALIVE by pests! Right after my friends and I were done with dinner, we saw a big roach crawl up one of the columns. We tried not to freak out and quickly left. I went home with some bites on my ankles and thought they were mosquito bites. NO! I woke up with a ridiculously swollen foot and went to the doctor's office. She said it was an extreme allergic reaction and to take prescription antihistamine and apply hydrocortisone.

I hobbled over to Chat n Chew afterwards, and spoke with the day manager, who took down my number said he would speak with the head manager. After a few days, the swelling went down, but then it suddenly swelled back up, even worse than before. I went back to the doctor and got a tox screen to rule out any poison or other infection. I ended up having to wear a hospital sock and keep my foot elevated at all times.

I think it was bedbugs because there's a crazy epidemic going on in NYC. I didn't feel anything stinging me as with ants or spiders, and I do not get this extreme of a reaction to mosquitoes or fleas. Bedbugs are known to be sneaky biters and hang out in groups, and victims get measle-like bites, sometimes as swollen as mine. I was tempted to attach a photo of my foot so you can see how terrible it looked and felt but I'll spare you the ugliness of it.

Nobody from the restaurant ever called to check if I was OK!

Although they have an A grading posted on their door, this is misleading. Read their review by the NYC Dept of Health here, with violations including evidence of rats. You will have to type in Chat n Chew into the search.

Kitschy Throwback Diner with Great Drinks & Shakes. In a low-ceilinged Christmas-lighted throwback of a diner, the “other” Union Square café is a cute place, serving "T.V. Dinners," mom's meatloaf and bubbling mac and cheese. The tight, 4-seat bar is equally boggling, though with a long $8 specialty cocktail list (try the white peach sangria--kin to the Long Island iced tea), and super thick Häagen-Dazs milkshakes at six bucks apiece, the place oozes with charm and a viable alternative to neighborhood's trendy eats. Head to the spacious backroom for a cooler space, more privacy and ornate signage from yesteryear.

Good lunch place, inexpensive. Generally an enjoyable experience...pretty friendly place "American portions "(ginormous)

The huevos rancheros is good...

Watch out for weekends..too many rugrats in strollers with permissive parents who seem to think bad behavior is cute...

Rude Service that rushes You out of the Place!!!. The Food is decent but the Waitresses rush you out the Restaurant. My Friend and I ordered one appetizer and two entrees. We weren't even halfway done with the appetizer when our entrees arrived. Before we were even done with our entrees, the Busboy had come over at least three times to take our plates. Waitress was unfriendly and had a scowl on her face the entire time (like she'd rather be getting a root canal). From sitting down and ordering to paying the check was a total of 35 minutes. Completely ridiculous!!! Quite an unpleasant dining experience!! I will not be returning any time soon.

delicious food ,fabulous music. Delicious food, fabulous music and a casual, friendly atmosphere made for a terrific birthday dinner at Chat'N"Chew .My friend, boyfriend and I started the night with a round of margaritas and two appetizers:the onion ribbons and macaroni and cheese. The onion ribbons were addictive and the mac and cheese was just as tasty as my friend Carolyn described. For dinner I enjoyed the bit with sweet potato fries while my boyfriend ordered the TV dinner, which was presented in a ceramic TV tray-very kitchy and kute.I couldn't stop picking at the green bean casserole on his plate .And although we were stuffed,we had to peruse the dessert menu, having heard their cakes and pies were not to be missed. After much deliberation,we all decided to share a slice of Vesuvious and a slice of apple crumb pie-a la mode of course.I don't know which I enjoyed more-the savory dinner or rich ,sweet desserts. However, what is perhaps equally important to me is prompt and friendly service. Our server tended to all our requests with haste and good humor, which has been consistent each sunsequent time i have visited.Satisfied w/such a marvelous experience has me pointing everyone i know in the direction of Chat'n Chew.

Sweet fun servers and yummy food!. I love this place! The food is delicious and perfect for the chilly weather, the ambience is character filled and charming and the servers are great! They are friendly, fun, and entertaining. The prices are excellent, especially for the portions and how delicious the food is. I have tried and loved uncle red's addicition, the delicious mac and cheese, the holy cow burger and the veggoe chili (my favorite). By far one of the best finds for cheap eats and friendly service in NYC. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to feel like they're at a home away from home!

Good time and a great value. went back last Saturday night with a group of friends; everyone loved it, the pork chops; Uncle Red's addiction (honey fried chicken) the tiny Mac n Cheese and the sweet potato fries and the fried oysters (all recommended); and we took a lot of it home; just too much! great value. down home atmosphere. Sit up front for more prompt service. But overall a fun and tasty time had by all.

Average-below average diner food, can't believe it got 4.5 stars.. We went there today, a party of 4, each ordered something else and none of us particularly cared for their meal. Granted we didn't try the mac & cheese (supposedly that's their "specialty", possibly the only good item on the menu), but we all thought our meals were average-below average. Nothing to write home about. For the life of me I don't get the rave reviews on this site. Sure, this place has character, it's been around for who-knows how long (and accordingly dirty, really), but character alone doesn't maketh a good meal. If you're a starving NYU student who just wants some cheap, crappy, "comfort food" at a late hour, this place is for you. Otherwise, there are better options out there.
