“If you're with friends and want some bar food, this is a good place.”
“But it's a plain wooden bar, some wooden booths, bartender not particularly friendly, nearly empty on a saturday night.”

Old, dank, crowded, and occasionally rowdy, this is one of the oldest bars in New York -- and it both looks and smells like it. That said, it has the virtue of still being a working, relevant bar, and not a parody of itself. The food quality is mediocre at best but I can't think of anywhere I'd rather drink a highball.
I USED TO WORK THERE TOO.
Though it's been a while, i'm sure not much has changed at pete's. The food is good, and so is the staff and patrons. And every once in a while you see a celebrity. Dan Akroyd gave me $20 once for bringing him a martini. You gotta love Pete's!
Oh yeah, in response to BillFrisk's review, c'mon Bill, give them a break! You know the kitchen staff work really hard to put out good food. and the mangement is nice too. Didn't you work w/Jos
A Classic and Great NY Bar.
This is bar is listed in the great BEST BARS OF NEW YORK book-- and it deserves it. The front of the bar was packed. It certainly isn't a hidden gem. But a gem it is. Pictures, notes, plaques from Pete's 100 year history cover the walls. The wood paneling in front stinks in the best possible way... of a long and proud antiquity.
All the servers were great. Willing to have a conversation... on anything... at the drop of the baseball hat-- or fedora. Some of the staff has been there more than 40 years. You would too! The back dining room is quieter and more sit-down group friendly than the front. Wherever you sit, don't be surprised if your neighbor drops over for a chat. By the end of the night, OUR neighbor was teaching us how to dance the hula. The beer selection is okay. The spicy chicken wings have a slight kick, but they're not Super. You won't care. This is a bar for the ages. Food and drink you can get anywhere in NY. Atmosphere like this is rarer than a polite Manhattanite. --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC Drinkers
Good times.
We just happened to pop in there on a rainy day and now we go quite often. Great find. Went there last night and had a wonderful meal. Great service, our waiter was more than helpful
Also, a bonus, how many bars have popcorn on the bar?
Petes does. good stuff
Every time is great there
Hadn't been for fifteen years. I moved from beloved NYC to Atlanta over fifteen years ago, I used to live in Gramercy Park and Pete's Tavern was always one of my favorite spots. After fifteen years, I returned with my husband and two children..I must say my experience was FABULOUS!!! They were so helpful with high chairs and booster seats for the kids, and even had items they could order off the menu!!!!! My husband and I both had Prime Rib which was enormous and a real bargain considering it was also served with a crisp salad and huge baked potato. The service was EXCELLENT and the food GREAT!!! I am so happy to recommend one of my favorite restaurants in NY.
Outside Dining. Myself and 2 girlfriends waiting to be seated for dinner at Petes on Tuesday, was told 10 -15 minute wait so we went inside and had a drink..,when the hostess went to bring us to our table...getting up from our table was Kate Hudson...how awesome was that!!! I wonder if AROD was nearby.....lol The food was aesome as well!!! We had a Goat Cheese salad, Salmon and a Prime Rib that was amazing!!! Will definitely be back!! Maybe we can run into Johnny Depp next time...we heard he is a regular!!
I Used To Work Here. I will tell you the truth about this place. The mangement is a collection of idiotic former busboys who semi-worked their way up and couldnt do anything but pretend to be managers. This is not the place for an elite college grad of hotel and restaurant management. They all run this place into the ground while the owner throws his money into it trying to save whatever reputation this once classic restaurant once had. The salad is rancid, left in a plastic bag in a melted trash can of ice. Most major health board ordinances are violated. None of the employees are required to sanitize ANYTHING from start of shift to finish. Food drops on the floor and is recycled into your mouth. The retard of a par time manager Declan might as well jerk off into your food because he is worthless and just as nasty at the desk. ...enough rants.... If you want the same quality of food for half the price go to a burger king or a popeyes because this restaurant is a pile of shit from the inside out. You want cheesecake? Ok the waiter will thumb it out of a frozen platter with their snot covered fingers onto your plate. God save NYC
The worst restaurant experience. Besides getting sick from the food, the wait staff was horrible. We actually thought our waitress was stoned or drunk. My friends and I will never go back there again.
After 4 decades, I still love it!. I started eating here in the early 70's, and every trip back to New York includes at least one dinner and one brunch at Pete's. The bar is terrific, and the food has generally been very good. My kids [adults now] really enjoy the pasta ala pete. You can't beat the atmosphere, and the staff is always attentive and efficient. And a walk around Gramercy Park after dinner doesn't hurt either.
THIS PLACE NEEDS SERIOUS MANAGERIAL PRESSENCE AND DIRECTION AS HOW TO SAFELY AND HYGENICALLY PREPARE FOOD! OMG!. My friend and I went there after work for drinks outside and some appetizers. Drinks were fine, service was slow and at best unorganized. I ordered fried calamari, very basic. The order came out half cooked the batter was doughy and raw, COMPLETELY tasteless. I sampled a few disgusting bites and waited almost a half an hour before our waiter came back to our table so that I could express my dissatifaction. I showed him how undercooked this order was and he agreed. He took back the calamari and returned about 10 minutes later with the EXACT SAME PLATE OF CALAMARI!!! THEY TOOK THE PLATE OF FOOD THAT WE TOUCHED AND ATE OFF OF AND PLACED IT DIRECTLY BACK INTO THE FRYER. THE WAITER CAME BACK WITH THE EXACT SAME PLATE OF FOOD BUT NOW MORE CRISPY AND COOKED! I was expecting them to actually bring us what we ordered but cooked this time. We assumed they would prepare this appetizer properly the second time around, instead of RECYCLING OUR FOOD! I do know that this is an unsafe way to handle food. If this is a common practice at Pete's Tavern, then contaminated food is a given. I was flabbergasted! I would strongly recommend NOT eating anything out of the fryer, nor the entire menu.
not interested in party of 1. I left the restaurant I work at in search of outside seating, a good beer and burger....My GM reminded me about Pete's Tavern...I've been to Pete's before and enjoyed myself....so I was pretty excited to go and get some good food, relax after a day at work at my own restaurant...unfortunately, it didn't quite happen as I had imagined...I was greeted and ceremoniously dismissed by the male host who said "we don't seat parties of 1 outside"...look I can understand maybe having a policy of not allowing guests to sit outside just for drinks after a certain hour but to not allow someone who was interested in sitting down to have dinner just because they are by themselves is a bit ridiculous...therefore I will no longer be coming to this establishment...So, be forewarned, if you are interested in just chilling out by yourself skip Pete's Tavern.
