Never Again – You figure you cant mess up diner food. I have ben here twice and both time I was extremely disappointed. Every piece of food I ever had there was subpar. Hot chocolate they skimp on by only using half a packet. Burgers and chicken fingers just didnt taste right, the shakes are watery and waaayy too sweet. Just overrall wasn't an enjoyable experience, the vibe of the place is goofy. You would figure a place selling their own t-shirts would take the time to serve some good food. This falls into the category of a tourist trap.
An Unexpected Side with Your Homefries – My friend and I had a lunch at BigDaddy's, and at the end of the meal I noticed this small insect on my plate. I showed it to the waiter, who called the manager right away. The manager apologized and offered me two $5 coupons to the place (as if I ever want to eat there again!). He, however, didn't hesitate to bring the FULL BILL, including the eggs with the side of those home fries. I suggested to the manager (politely, I must say) to take the gift certificates back and not to charge me AT LEAST for the insect dish. He did take off this dish from the bill, but didn't do it with the rest of the meal as I expected. I will never be back--on top of serving me an insect from the kitchen, they didn't take care of their disgusted customer.
Great food, excellent service – I really like Big Daddy's! My friend and I just went there we have gotten wonderful service. The first time I went and ordered for carry-out, and it took a while longer than expected for a burger, but the host told me that he couldn't make any promises about speed so I appreciated that honesty. It ended up being worth the wait though. The next time I went back with a friend and the same young man served us and was very prompt and we both ordered the Lee's Chicken Salad which was exceptional. The server was a lot of fun too, saying he had just moved to New York and kind of played with us as we ordered, he was great...It seems that he loves his job! I would go back for the entertainment of him alone, but the food is a definite draw...(not overpriced for the portions and the quality---this is NOT a diner!)
The only thing I would say is just that--do not go for pick-up orders as it is not the speediest place on earth, if you're in a rush, but if you have time it is sooo worth it!
Great place... – I love Big Daddys. I eat or order from here at least twice a week. I hear a lot of people whine about the prices b/c they think they're stepping into a Joe Juniors old NY type of late night diner (dont know why considering the location... duh), and as far as a rest. on Park Ave goes its a pretty good deal for really good portions and fresh food. If your looking for a $2.95 greasy egg and bacon on a roll then go to a deli on third ave. My advice is to give yourself time to eat there (good atmosphere anyway) and dont go if your looking for a quick in/quick out greasy spoon place, it's a restaurant with an Americana/diner theme IMO, your food can take a good 15 minutes but its worth the wait.
Recommended... Tater Tots and the Rappers Delight 2 sandwich.
Great comfort food! – The Yogi Bear Smoothie is the best smoothie ever. The berry berry pancakes were delish!! the waitress was super friendly and helpful with helping us choose what to order. I'd come back every weekend for brunch!
Big Daddy; BIG DISAPPOINTMENT – Ordered the house special "Fried Chicken" bit into it and it was cold in middle, which my date and I touched just to make sure we weren't imagining this. Notified Waitress, she notified manger. Few minutes later brought me out Chicken again, with the same half eaten/bitten piece still sitting on top, just fried over or microwaved. My date tried the leg and could not eat it, thought it tasted like freezer burn chicken. Waitress or manger NEVER came back over to see if second time around any better. Finally bus boy cleared my never eaten plate. Had to ask 3 different people for check. Mentioned to waitress (where the manger could overhear) that chicken was horrible, she made an excuse that they were short staffed. I would never go back. Don't know what the fuss is about...We were not the only ones there that could not get good service. Noticed people having to wave hands in the air in order to get a waitress to take an order.
Great food, great diner, great service, HUGE portions – I've tried almost everything on big daddy's menu and i've practically loved it all (except for the yogurt granola parfait--DO NOT try to be healthy here!!). The service is inconsistent, but some of the waitstaff is really nice and i appreciate them. I am definitely a regular, and love this place and its HUGE portions. The chicken-lickin sandy is great as is the tuna melt the tater tots and fries. =) Got delivery from them a few times, not as great, but much better than ANY diner you'll find ANYWHERE
Great food, wonderfully decorated and good music! – I visited NYC with my daughter last weekend and stopped by Big Daddy's for lunch. We had a hard time trying to choose from the extensive menu. Everything on menu was tempting but after a few minutes I ordered the Big Daddy Burger and my daughter chose the chicken tenders from the kid's menu. Our food came out so quickly. I would say it took no more than 10-15 minutes for the food to come out. Everything was prepared to perfection and the portions were enormous. The kid's meals all come with a drink and a free sundae. My daughter and I were entirely too stuffed to have dessert at the restaurant. I took the Hawaiian Pineapple Upside Down Cake home for dessert, which was delicious!
The only gripe I have with my experience at Big Daddy's was that once we were seated it took a while for our server to greet us and take our drink orders. There was a couple who were seated after us and they were greeted by their server about five minutes before we were greeted by ours. Aside from that everything was fantastic. The food and the 80's music far surpassed that small issue. I will definitely make this a regular stop on future visits to NYC!!!!
Rude doesn't even begin to cover it....... – A co-worker and I went there today for lunch. We were greeted by the hostess after standing in the entryway for a few minutes as she was engrossed in staring at the bottom shelf of the stand. We explained to her we would like to order for take out. Without even looking at us, she points in the direction of the counter and said the server there would take the order. So we take seats at the counter and wait for the counter girl to finish scooping ice cream for shakes. After a few minutes, she gave us a glance and we asked her for menus so we could place our orders. Well she slammed the freezer door shut and proclaimed "Oh I don't take the outgoing orders, she does" pointing to the hostess. So we go back to her and she said ?OK I guess I can do it?, as if she was doing us a favor. By now, we are on song 2 blaring overhead. At this point, we again ask for a menu and she said ?Well you don't know what you want?? We explained we?d never been there before and she begrudgingly handed over one menu so I asked for my own and she bent down and handed it to me, all the while with her back facing me. So we returned to sit at the counter to figure out what we wanted, walked back to the hostess and she inputs our orders on the PC and then she put her hand out for our money and walked over behind the counter where she and the counter girl were having a full fledged animated conversation, the hostess' arms flailing about, like they were chit chatting at a party or something, all the while, with our money in her hands. Now we were on at least the 3rd song playing overhead so my co-worker walked over to her and asked to cancel her order and requested her money back. She promptly handed over her money and then walked into the kitchen as I walked towards her for my money. When she reappeared, she said ?Oh, I guess you want your order cancelled too?? as she handed over my money with a smirk. Obviously they had no desire to serve us and we will never go back there again!
