Great Seafood Specials and Happy Hour.
I came here late night with my friends for their one-time deal of 1 1/4 lb lobster for half the price, which is about $13. This is probably the best deal I have ever seen. It also comes with a side dish.
Our waitress was new but he was very friendly and attentive. The lobster tastes fresh and it is very juicy. There isn't much seasoning because it doesn't really need it. We got sides of spinach, meshed potato, and sweet potato fries. Everything is good but the spinach lacks some seasoning.
Overall, the experience was great and the restaurant has tons of diners. I wish they have the lobster special all the times!
DO NOT EAT HERE. The food isn't cooked properly. The management and waiters are rude, the food took almost an hour and there were no apologies given, only "its busy so its going to take a while". Its so not worth it. There are much better, more authentic, less expensive seafood restaurants in the city with better atmosphere. The only place cheesier is Red Lobster... I take that back, they are tied. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place like the plague.
Great seafood, great service. I went for restaurant week, and I was very impressed. Although the bar downstairs was too busy when we came early for a drink, a spot was cleared at the bar upstairs soon after we got there. There is only a tap downstairs though, and my beer brought up from downstairs was warm (one of the reasons for only 4 stars). The servers were all very accommodating and did not give us a hard time at all that 2 of our party of 4 ended up letting us know that they were not coming, and we were not rushed at all while we thought we were still waiting for the other two. The chowder was rich and tasty. I got the twin lobsters, which was a great deal at restaurant week, and I usually ONLY like lobster when I'm in Maine and it just came out of the ocean a day or two ago (live lobsters in tanks just don't cut it). One of the lobsters was suberb. Of the second, I gave one claw to my roommate and had one myself, and was very disappointed with the consistency. My roommate assured me that her claw was good, but I think that perhaps for restaurant week they give you one fresh lobster and one not as fresh. My roommate's crab cakes were good, with actual big pieces of crab, which is not so common (I don't think she liked them so much, but I thought they were yummy). The chocolate mousse was rich and indulgent. Overall, I was very pleased with the food for restaurant week, especially as I mentioned I usually only like lobster straight out of the ocean in Maine; and the service was wonderful - it meant a lot to us that they didn't try to rush us or get upset that two of the four didn't come. I'd like to go back for a happy hour and will keep City Crab in mind for a splurge for dinner for a special occasion.
Soooo over this place!!!. I've been residing in the NYC for 16 years, this place was my favorite restaurant until things started to change. I receive lots of visitors and always took them to this place. They in turn became frequent diners as well. City Crap has started to slip with their bait and switch specials and recently I had the pleasure of encountering a ROACH on my table!! Yes, that right a roach. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever experienced. I called for the manager, who never bothered to come over. We left and have vowed to never return. I have been spreading this news with anyone that will listen as well as, notifying media outlets and health department. Be aware this place has gone down the drain. Good luck.
GREAT SEAFOOD. If you want to eat some tasty oysters and are to far from from the oyster bar in grand central this is the place to go.
The restaurant had a "special" for a 2 pound lobster for $20. When I got the bill, each lobster dinner was listed for $40 - apparently the $20 was meant to indicate $20 for each pound.
The waitress deferred to the manager who refused to rectify this. $40 for a lobster is what you would expect to pay in an upscale restaurant, not this middle of the road joint. I felt really burned by this place, the manager didn't care.
Awful Service, Cold Food.
I ate at City Crab 6 months ago and the food and service were excellent, but on my most recent visit (8/22/09) the standards had dropped so low that it was a shell (pun intended) of its former self. We brought out of town guests with us, and it was a total embarrassment. I, personally, will never return of my own free will. Here are the details:
1. Our server didn't mention any specials, and when we asked he quickly mumbled something unintelligible.
2. Five minutes after ordering, our server returned and told me they had run out of crab legs. Yes, out of CRAB legs at City CRAB! This was at 7:30, and not the end of the night. 3. We waited an hour and a ten minutes for our entrees, our server ignored us the entire time and never ONCE stopped by to explain the delay. In fact, we were seated on the 2nd floor and he was nowhere to be seen on the entire floor. An apology and explanation would have gone a long way to alleiving our annoyance (several of us having worked/working in the restaurant business) but instead, we were left in the lurch getting hungrier and more irritated.
4. When our food finally arrived after the hour and ten minute wait, it was uniformly cold. I was stuck with cold crab claws, and the rest of the table was served cold swordfish or cod with cold mashed potatoes. We managed to get our server's attention, and without apologizing, he took the plates back to be warmed up (microwaved). After waiting so long, we were pretty livid. He returned with the manager (who had been lounging in a booth by the door watching TV the ENTIRE time ) who didn't really seem to care about our complaints. He agreed that, yes, the service was indeed bad, and quickly scampered back to his booth after assuring us he would fix the situation.
5. After such a crappy experience, we expected a good chunk of our meal to be comped, but we merely received a random $38 credit toward our $270 bill! Our food was worth nowhere near that amount, but we just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.
My advice: There are MANY great seafood places in the city all competing for your business in this economy, and there is NO reason to settle for a place this awful when you're spending that much money. City Crab does not care about its customers or its food and it shows. From our party alone, they lost 3 repeat customers and 2 potential new ones, and I'm sure they will continue to lose more with their horrendous customer service.
Horrible!. I think the great reviews are from employees of this restaurant. I ate there at lunchtime service, around 2PM. First of all, I was brought a dirty cup and saucer to make my own tea with. I refused the entire thing and told the waiter to take it away. Then my sister and I ordered the gumbo and the baked clams. The gumbo was a 1 on a scale of 1-5. It looked like slimy goop, but I was hungry, so I ate it. I moved onto the clams which looked horrible. It was tiny and had toasted dried breadcrumbs on top, which all fell off the plate once I stuck my fork in to get to the actual clam. The clam was like chewing on rubber. I had to sp!t it out. We told our waiter, who took that off our bill and apologized. I assured him it was no fault of his. I think the only pleasant experience I had was meeting our waiter, because the service was the best thing that came out of the restaurant. I wouldnt recommend the lunchtime service here at all.
George is Free....... I have never visited this restaurant and I probably never will, I live on the other side of the country. I just want to say how terrific of you in sending George the lobster back home. Good for you!!!!!!! I say thank you and I am sure George does, too (if he could).
So many choices. City Crab is an amazing restaurant. The menu has lots of options to choose from, and the ambiance of the restaurant is really warming. You can't go wrong with anything you order, and the service is fantastic!
