Ancient, rowdy, and run by a truculent old right-winger, this old-school bar is home to whiskey straight up and one of the city's best chili dogs.
Inspection Grade "A" is not real!!!!!.
I have been going to lunch here at least 3 times a month for the past few months. While waiting outside for friends to finish up I noticed the "A" rating in the window. Only what I also noticed was a "Grade Pending" paper conviently on the window floor. When I got back to my office I looked up the restaurant and found out that neither grade was real!! The place has a "B" rating with 17 violations including Live Roaches PRESENT! Stay away!
I actually called to complain and the manager said "Sir, do me a favor and keep this to yourself and just don't come back"...amazing customer service!
okay food but excellent atmosphere. Great place to meet friends for drinks and game..food okay but atmosphere is excellent....historic bldg
A Classic New York Bar.
We returned to this place not because of the spectacular food or service (they weren't), but because it was listed in the great BEST BARS OF NEW YORK book. It is, indeed, an old place with a rich history and lots of wood! BUT, this time it had great service and a menu that seemed improved from what I remember. (Check the handbills for daily specials.)

We had a couple very friendly waitresses, including the granddaughter of the original owner. Dad was downstairs behind the bar. I had the raw littleneck clams (in August!)... and except for some crunchiness in the first one... they were pretty good. The buffalo wings, while not spectacular, did have a nice kick.

The place was really loud (customers and acoustics, not music) at 9:30, but by 10:30 was pretty quiet... upstairs. The bar downstairs was less raucous than it had been earlier, but still hoppin'. All-in-all, I'm glad we came back here! --Drink Club is a roving group of NYC drinkers
Old New York in Union Square. At first it wasn't encouraging. We went upstairs to try to find a table, and there were a couple booths free. I call the crew up and a very severe looking waitress (the place must be 100 years old, and she was probably there for the opening), says WE'RE CLOSED UP HERE and flips the OPEN sign to the CLOSED side. So, down the stairs we go. Another severe-looking waitress seats us in the back and moves some furniture to accommodate us. Then things get better. The bar food is standard, clam strips instead of calamari, but from the burgers to the buffalo wings, everything else is the same as anywhere. Gil says the burgers were excellent. The beer list was decent. They serve pitchers of all the tap beer, EXCEPT Guinness for some reason. The bar itself is beautiful. Very old New York from the pictures and letters on the wall to the massive wood bar and tables. The atmosphere is not super friendly, but if you byog (bring your own group), you'll enjoy the place for the pure old New York feel. --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers

Old Time Saloon.
Wish more places were still around like this. Great burgers. Awesome Hotdogs. Cold Beer.
Was just in there last week for our annual Holiday pub crawl of old bars. Like the year before, the crawl stopped at the Old Town b/c there's not much motivation to leave there. Place looks great around Christmas. keep it old, don't change a thing.
Great Bar.
Cold draft, good burger, warm atmosphere. What else do you need?
Anyone who doesn't get the Old Town, just doesn't get it. Some people get it, some people never will. I'm glad most of the people in Old Town get it.
come for the burgers, stay for the politics. everything that is awesome about Flatiron encapsulated in one fine drinking establishment. Took my wife here early in our courtship.
