Lost its Luster. Went back to Mitali's after many years, taking an out-of-towner to experience what we said was the best Indian food in the city. Everything was still tasty but Mitali is obviously now cutting corners. Our fried cheese dish had exactly two 1/2-inch cubes of cheese in it, so two of us got cheese and two of us went without! The crab korma tasted like crab but it was just all ground-up crab, so it was basically a bowl of gravy. No chunks of crabmeat. The order of Aloo Paratha was enough for maybe two people, but also easily eaten by just one. All in all, no longer worth the shlep into the East Village...

Revisit after a long time.. I used to go to mitali ten years ago when I used to live in NYC, recently I visted some family members in NYC and we all went to eat their as I remembered it used to be my indian food place. I was suprised to see it is still there and the food is still reliable as it was back then. I plan on going back on my next visit.

A winner on 6th street - really nice. We went for our first time last night and had a great experience. Go here. Chicken Madras, Tandori chicken, shrimp saag were incredible. We went at 9pm with a reservation for two and had no problem sitting down and spending all the time we wanted. The staff was really nice.

For your reference, we usually like to go to Tamarind - and were hard-core Masala Zone fans while in Soho, London.

If you're trolling around trying to find an Indian place that you, your date or your group will like, you won't go wrong here. This isn't pushing the boundaries of the cuisine here - but it's a great execution of solid Indian cooking.

Minor negative observation: The dishes did seem a bit oily - or just heavier than some Indian dishes can tend to be. This was a minor point though. You will avoid it entirely by getting tandori.

Mitali hits the spot everytime. Mitali is located on a block full of Indian restaurant, but it really stands out. It's the only one without cheesy decor and the only one without some guy outside trying to get you to come in. Mitali is a comfortable, dimly lit place with amazing food. The curry dishes are very flavorful and the meat is tender, the samosa is the best i've had. The best part of the meal is the bread; it's baked to order is just amazingly good. The service is good, there's never too long of a wait for the food. Some of the waiters look like they really don't want to be there though! The prices are very nice too, $40-50 gets 2 people a VERY filling dinner including wine or beer (try the Taj Mahal Lager, it's pretty good!).

Editorial Review. This tapestry-strewn restaurant is one of the longest-running--and best--of Sixth Street's Indian restaurant row.

Best Indian. The one of best Indian restaurants I have eaten in and I am a huge fan of Indian food. The restaurant is very classy and beautiful. The authentic Indian statues and scenery are very compelling. The food is also of very high quality and of course delicious. The price is right and you get way more than you pay for. The service is great many waiters will continually ask for your input and will fix any problem you have. They have a wide variety in their menu and there all great. My favorite is of course their great selection in vegetarian meals. My favorite is their Malai kufta which is a creamy ball filled with different vegetables. I also love their chana shag which is spinach filled with chick peas and the flavors can be varied so try it. Also they have a great selection in wines. They also have a great selection in dessert I love their sorbet which comes in many flavors such as coconut, orange, peach and more. They also have great rice pudding [kheer] which I recommend. There are also mango nectar and coconut custard which i recommend also. I also highly recommend their all you can eat buffet in the weekends. The food is so great you will actually try to eat it all.

By far the BEST Indian food for the price in Manhattan. I have been coming to Mitali East for years. In my opinion, it is one of the best Indian restaurants in the city- and prices are reasonable too. The decor/ambiance is nice although a little dark at times. I highly recommend their chicken makhani, chana masala, or chicken korma. They are delicious!

If you're looking for great Indian food for a reasonable price, def check out Mitali East. You won't be disappointed.

One of the very best on india row.. I have noticed many Indian restaurants come and go but mitali has been around for long as I can remember, I have been going to this place since I was a small kid with my parents, the food is always reliable and great, and the staff helpful on most but not all visits.

Abrupt service, reasonable food. My husband and I had a late lunch here today. Service was abrupt and rather rude, as if they really didn't want us around even though there were only 3 other tables occupied besides ours. The food - chicken biriyani, mixed veg curry and naan - was presentable but hardly fantastic. The rice didn't taste at all fresh. Overall our experience was nowhere close to what we had been expecting from the restaurant's rave reviews.
