Big disappointment.
I don't understand the five star rave reviews for this place!!! We ate there Sunday evening 4/25/10... We were excited at first to see the "early bird special prices", but the rolls were tiny and NOT FRESH. We are not sushi roll experts, but we've had sushi all around the USA and this was likely the least fresh, the least amount, the worst tasting experience yet. I mentioned to the waiter that the one roll in particular was not fresh, I couldn't even eat it. But he just presented me with the bill with not another word. Save yourself the disappointment and go elsewhere.

cheap AND good.
this is a small, casual dining place that has the best priced, tastiest japanese food on st. mark's. because it's a small place, it can get a little busy at times, but if you show up around 8 on most nights they can seat you. we've had a group as large as 8 there by making a reservation. what i like about this place is that their food is tasty and fresh, and reasonably priced. if you are a fan of sashimi, their mackerel, tuna and salmon are always a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture. in addition to their regular rolls, they also offer nightly specials -- one of my favorite nightly specials is the fatty tuna and scallion roll. it's fresh and light with just the right amount of salt and spice from the onion. they also have side dishes like pumpkin, which they do steamed and salty, and it is unexpected and good! their okonomiyaki, the seafood-vegetable pancake, is heavenly -- crispy, warm and salty with delicate flavors. they have a pretty nice selection of salads -- my favorite is the green salad, which comes with avocado, plenty of carrots and lettuce and a tangy miso-sesame dressing. they also have more adventurous food like natto.
so the food is great, but this is a quiet, unpretentious spot, not trendy at all. i go here when i just want a quiet meal and nothing fancy. the only thing that is a slight problem is the service. sometimes they are a little slow to get the food to your table, and not all the waitresses seem happy to serve you. but i've never had a horrible service experience there, and the food and homey comfort of the place keep me coming back.

favourite japanese place all around.
I love this place. Great mellow atmosphere. Reasonable prices. I just order appitizers, mainly from the speacls menu. Soft shell crab dishes and squid dishes are a must.

real old-east- villlage place..
This is the kind of place only a few people can appreciate. I don't think tourists who are just looking for fancy places do. This place is so original,non-pretensious,laid-back, and somewhat funnky. Food is also very good. Chirashi has so many fish on rice and they are all fresh. If you are looking for a secret, relaxing place, go to Natori.

Funky hometown feel.
Natori is my local sushi joint and I am happy for that; it has reasonably fresh sushi at very good prices. They are very friendly, have smoking and non smoking in two seperate rooms, and it's small funky atmosphere is refreshingly laid back for a sushi place.
They also sell alligator meat (shoga)! Very good.
And my favorite, which I have never seen anywhere else, is
Yasai Don, fresh Japanese vegetables on rice, very good.
