Editorial Review for Republic – by Ethan J. Sacks
In Short
Set in a warehouse-sized room bathed in dark bluish light, Republic is one of the hottest restaurants in Union Square by virtue of its nouvelle take on affordable Asian cuisine. The noodle dishes (the best is a spicy chicken in a coconut milk-based broth) and the appetizers are a harmonious hodge-podge of Thai, Japanese, and other East Asian cuisines. Benches surround communal, lunch-hall tables, and the din in the high-ceilinged room can become deafening.

this place is horrible. I can't even think about the food to write about it. the service was fine, she did her duties. just another place that caters to mass public.

This place is the PERFECT casual dining spot. Everything on the menu is relatively inexpensive, but the quality is fantastic, and the portions are always huge. Where else in NYC can you order a watercress salad that's actually big enough to be a meal (okay, well, depending on how hungry you are...), for $4? You pay $4 for a bowl of rice at some restaurants! This is a great summer restaurant, especially if you sit outside. I recommend their Frozen Lychee martini (but be warned, it's thick enough to be a smoothie) and for dessert, the Black Sesame ice cream.
