Editorial Review for Heartland Brewery Union Square – by Erin Behan
The Scene
After work, after the movies, after dinner, after a date, after the green market--this branch of the New York City brewpub chain works well to top off almost any casual day or night out without much hassle. Its dark wood interior and mix of high-top tables near the front bar and deep wooden booths toward the back serves a mix of drinkers and eaters, but don't try to kid anyone--you're here for the beer.
The Draw
Farmer Jon's oatmeal stout is an out-front winner, and despite its deep, rich flavor with hints of espresso, the finish never gets heavy. For those who like lighter beer, the Cornhusker lager nicely balances mild hops flavors with that of sweet malt. Menu items range from expected starters, such as onion rings, mini-burgers and quesadillas to sandwiches and more adventurous items, such as grilled rib eye. A low carb menu is also available.

Insider Tips
Where to SitIf it's open, the mezzanine makes a nice people-watching spot, but in the summer, the prime location is the sidewalk seating.

This is my first time at the Union Square location. I must say I have to disagree with the reviewer who claimed waitresses were rude. My two friends and I arrived and were told about the seating regulations (which is acceptable, you need more space for dinner than for appetizers) we waited for 5 minutes and got a table at the lower level. The waitress was nice and attentive even when my friend who suffered a sudden drop in her BP lost consciousness, the manager helped carrying her to a couch, called ambulance, and refused to take neither a tip nor the pay for the tab (actually we drank only 1/3 of the samplings but finished the appetizers) even after my friend recovered and insisted on paying. Extremely amicable waitress and manager Two thumbs up! I give you guys 2 thumbs up
Pros: Amicable staff, nice food, quick service
Cons: Noisy

While in NY, we went here because we love to try new beer. We decided on the sampler and were so very pleased. The IPA was yucky, but I don't like any IPAs so that was not a surprise. Their light beer has king of a citrus taste to it. I was great. The food was really good as well. The waitstaff was excellent. I loved it. Thanks!
