What Our Expert Scouts Say

Pommes Frites
January 18, 2013

Oh hallo, Pommes Frites, is that you flagging me down like a taxicab with your wafting fried aromas and endless list of sauces? We tried your Vietnamese Five Spice Pineapple Mayo and almost swooned. Dill lemon, sweet chili, and curry ketchup are also sure bets. Thick crispy frites with tangy sauces will always hold a place in my late-night heart.

French fries are the ultimate walking-around food, and this temple of frites might be the ultimate source for them. The twice-fried potatoes come in paper cones with a choice of dipping sauces, and you buy them from a window, pay, and then walk away, happy and greasy.

good sauce .. OK fries.. EHH overall. Drunk - Pommes Frittes is awesome.

Sober - Go somewhere else

Pommes Frittes is one of those late night spots to get some fried goodness after a long night of drinking.. you dont notice the lines, you dont taste anything due to the all the alcohol you drank. except you think its awesome. I went one night with a few of my friends. and was really excited to get some pommes frittes .. and I wasn't really thrilled. Their sauces are good, yes, but the fries themselves are not tasty at all.. they're very bland and nothing to rave about. But if you're out of town give it a try. Thats what the experience is all about.. waiting on that long line, and sitting next to some strangers crowded in that hole in the wall fast food joint.

great late night spot. Walking up to the spot the line outside was intimidating. Even though it was long it moved quite quickly. The sauces were worth the wait. Great place to go after you leave a club or lounge just for a snack at 1am.

Best. Fries. Ever.. What else can I say? The fries are made fresh. Not fresh from a frozen package, but fresh as in the potatoes are cut right in front of you. The staff is friendly and efficient. They try to make the wait as short as possible without being pushy and they let you sample the sauces. As for the sauces, try them all. I have yet to come across a bad one. Nothing beats walking through the village, hangin with friends eating a cone of fries! It does get crowded and seating is limited, but don't let that stop you from going! Its soo worth it!

Keep on walking!!!. I was so excited to actually get to visit after seeing this location on the Food Network, but was greatly disappointed!! The fries were terrible (i have had frozen fries that were better). Forget about trying to sit down and eat unless you want to sit on a strangers lap. Staff isn't very helpful with menu either. Save your money and go to the golden arches.

really good dipping sauce. They'll be a wait for the fries at Pommes but defnitely worth it. The fries are regular type of fries (kind of greasy but aren't most?) but my 4 stars goes to the different type of sauces. We had our fries with the Mango sauce and it was delicious! I would recommend this place for a quick snack on the go.

Best french fries ever. I just moved to NYC and I was all excited about the pizza. This was until I had the french fries. A friend of mine dragged me there at 11 PM to find a long line outside. Im glad I waited.

Bland Tasting Fries. I was so anxious to go to Pommes Frites after reading the rave reviews about the fries. So in Sep. 2007, I finally went to the East Village after years of visiting the area. The place is so tiny, I walked 4 blocks past it. Then I turned around and walked back the opposite way and found it. Oh Brother! what a disappointment. I should have kept on walking, right down the subway steps!

The lady behind the counter let me try a few tries for free with 4 sauces. I had the pineapple sauce, teriyaki, garlic and mango. I ended up liking the mango and pineapple sauces.I then ordered the small cone of fries. They were already fried and she fried them again in what looked like a wok filled half way with oil. I had the order to go. As I was walking down the street towards the subway, I started to eat the fries dipped into the sauces. The sauces were so good, I couldn't believe that I didn't miss ketchup. It actually tasted so much better than ketchup. Now the reason why I give the place a low rating is because the fries taste like nothing. They are really no big deal. They just taste like plain white potatoes that are over-fried and kind of greasy. It's the sauces that are a big deal. Actually Burger King's and Wendy's fries taste better and cost a lot less.

Even frozen Ore Ida fries have way more flavor.

Best Pomme Frites in town. This place has great French Fries! We have been here at least 4 times and love going back. This is where we like to bring kids and other french fry fanatics who visit NYC. One downside is they recently increased the price of sauces...you used to be able to get one free sauce with every order and now you have to pay for all of them. It's worth it though. Yummy!

Next best thing out of Europe. Ive tried Frites in germany and in amsterdam. This is just like what i had when i was there. The sauce selection is amazing , and the ones that I have tasted have all been excellent. Also you can try all the sauces before you buy something which is great . The poutine which was something my partner loved and i was new to trying was absolutely mouth watering. On top of that its inexpensive, and its open late. The only thing that i would say is a con would be that there isn't alot of room to sit .

BIG disappointment!. I was really looking forward to trying this place out since I love fries and had read a lot of good reviews on it. Unfortunately, it was such a big disappointment. I don't know if we went on a bad day or not but the fries weren't good at all. They were quite soggy and the number of sauces that we tried weren't very good either...especially the curry ketchup one...which in my opinion was pretty gross. I was expecting so much more from this place and thought that I could have gotten the same fries (or even better ones) at any other random place out there.
