“The location is great, and they are a good store with a wide selection of new books, but they have been slowly taken over by their video gam.”
“Huge selection of titles, very helpful and knowledgeable staff -- even for obscure titles.”
“This is probably the best store I found for comic collectors to buy their new/used old/new comics!”
“The staff was super helpful and very friendly- I don't understand how the other reviewers had a bad experience with them.”
“Avoid this place, worst prices in New York!”
The Comic Spot. Forbidden Planet is a pretty good spot for your favorite comics. Its never really too crowded and the staff is helpful if I am unable to find what I am looking for right away. Occasionally I'll get caught up like most customers and indulge in some comics before I decide to purchase. But unlike most retail locations an associate manages to walk over and remind us that we're not in Borders lol. This isn't really the spot if your looking for any good classics either (limited supply). But at least they have really good collection of current title.
Forbidden Planet is great. Awesome place the prices are great (i dunno who b****ed about the prices in the comments below but I shop at a few other places as well and i've always found this place to be way cheaper + the staff is friendly ans always know what they're talking about. Simone approved dude. ; )
Avoid this place, worst prices in New York!.
I would never recommend this place. They have the worst prices on collectables and action figures in the entire city, let alone anywhere else in the region. They also have the worst return policy i have ever come in contact with. Even on merchandise purchased that same day in unopened boxes they will not give refunds on credit cards. Maybe that would be acceptable if they price matched but of course they dont! Do yourself a favor and walk a few blocks over to St Marks's comic's or any of the other shops anywhere else...
Oh and don't think I work at St Mark's or anything, I'm just a disgruntled customer!
The store display looks really nice....
... but it's kinda crowded inside. They make good use with the space they have, but I wish there were some more labels on the shelves other than "By alphabetical order". All of Frank Miller, Alan Moore, and Neil Gaiman's works are collected on separate shelves, though. Still, it's the kind of store you want to comb front and back before you leave.
All in all, it's probably cheaper to find this stuff at Amazon, but you should just stop in for the experience if you like to people watch.
Great place for newbies. I'm just starting to get into the world of comics and was admittedly a little worried that I would feel like a total philistine walking into a place like this with nary a clue, but I was really pleasantly surprised. The staff was super helpful and very friendly- I don't understand how the other reviewers had a bad experience with them. I told them I had no idea what I was doing and asked their opinions on a title I picked up (All Star Superman- turns out it rocks) and they were more than happy to help me out & give me some recommendations, even though the place was really busy at the time. I will definitely be back!
Good but not great.... A little unorganized and "crowded" for the space they have. Seem to have a good selection of toys and comics but wouldn't say great(considering their rep & how long they've been around). Once I hunted down the staff for help, they were friendly but no one went out of their way until then. Would have liked to see more independant titles but did find some rare action figures so I came out a happy camper!
Get your nerd on at the sci-fi and alt comic collector's nirvana..
The Scene
Shields up and full dork ahead. No matter if you're a cool jock or a downtown hipster, everyone turns into a gibbering fanboy within minutes of entering these premises, so just strap on your light saber holster and enjoy. Forbidden Planet is ridiculously well stocked and staffed by geekier-than-thou, but eminently knowledgeable, genre aficionados. Got a burning question about an obscure title? Let the staff be your Gandalf. Not only will they have the answer, they probably have every back issue.
The Goods
Grown men are reduced to tears at the sight of sci-fi movie paraphernalia and comic titles of their youth. The catalog runs the gamut from mainstream Marvel classics to indie obscurities, and the action figure selection is vast enough to decorate the cubicles of every I.T. guy in town. Warning: Dropping by at lunchtime can become dangerously habit forming.
Geek rage. Nice assortment of comics and graphic novels. Well sized action figure collection. But what really makes this place stand out is the staff. If you like being jugded as you enter the store and being put down by "hip and trendy" gen-xers, well my friends this is the place for you. Where else can you go and find a place where the local high school geek squad can find a level playing field and knock you down a peg. But hey they know their comics right? Right. And in the end thats all that really matters *cough* not *cough*.
