The cobbler's art lives at this store and workshop. – The Scene
Neumann's focus is on handbags and sandals, which run from strappy to more full-bodied styles. The flat sandals--nailed and hand-stitched together as in the days of yore--are utterly fetching, available in shades of deep turquoise or lemon yellow. Heeled shoes boast a solid hunk of walnut or cherry wood, oiled to show off the grain. In all of her work, Neumann favors delicate, supple leathers that shape to the wearer.
German-born Neumann did not even begin working with leather until she was 37. She had sewn her own clothes as a child and later worked in a variety of fields--from theater and mime to social work. In 1987 she came to New York, had a baby and, she says, "got depressed and had to find something to do." She started working under a neighborhood craftswoman, one of the holdouts from New York's hippie days, before opening her own store in 1994.
an absolut must for sandal lovers – I love this store... own several of their sandals, handbags and belts. I often get stopped by people on the street who ask me where I bought my sandals. Beautiful designs... and friendly customer service.
Unprofessional – Ordered a simple belt. Never called to say if it was ready. After repeated calls to them where very poor English was spoken, ready after 7 weeks and then incorrect size. THen when asked to mail after these delays failed to do so. Awful.
