The second, East Village location of this Japanese salon accommodates patrons with cuts, blow drys, and massage.
Editor's Tips
- When to Go:
- Walk-ins may luck out and be able to score a last-minute chair, but there are no guarantees. In the West Village? Try their other salon.
- The Extras:
- Although the free massage policy is inconsistent, shiatsu massages are available at $45 for 30 minutes.
- Know Before You Go:
- The salon accepts cash only.

It's pretty hard to find a place that gives high quality cuts for guy hair (um, that's receding a bit) - cuts that look flattering, hip, and grow out really well - for less than $50 in NY. If you're like me and hate bothering getting you're hair cut, it helps to find a place that can cut it so well it still looks good after 3-5 months. There were a couple great places I had found in Brooklyn: The Beehive, then Public, Wood.. and Bunny - but they eventually raised their rates too high for me. After trying a lot of duds in Manhattan, I finally stumbled into this place. Though I can't speak to their 'Asian' hair cut, which is apparently their specialty, if you have 'white persons' hair like me, I'd highly recommend Gerardo or the other guy on the top floor. Once I accidently wound up with a female Japanese stylist and I ended up looking like a member of a Korean boy band.
- Pros: Best for Different Types of Dude Hair
- Cons: Cash Only

I made an appt. @ Hoshi Coup II this Sunday @ 5:45pm. I was there on time and was received by Akemi who was to cut my hair. She began with a long shampoo as my hair was a mess and this was extremely relaxing. Initially, she had a lady translating when I sat down, she asked what I was looking for and how do I usually cut my hair and how long since my last cut? I let her know that it had been almost 2 months and that I typically comb my hair straight down. They then asked me if I use styling was or gel? I replied sometimes. I let them know I was here for something new or at least a break from the hair cut I had.
She then began to prepare for the cut, initially, I thought Akemi was very new as she took some time, kind of sizing my hair up. She then took a long time around my temples/forehead and seemingly cut nothing. She continued cutting and picked up the pace as well. She then asked if it was too long and I replied no, that all was ok. She then finished up on me and washed my hair again, it was only then that I could see that she was amazing. Probably due to my Chinatown haircuts, I noticed that my hairs were long and looked strange around my temple. I guess this happens when you ask for only scissors-haircut and they switch to a machine later on. Akemi has an eye for things; I then though I should shut up cos she knows her stuff. In the end I had the best haircut of my life. I felt it inside me. I had spent time looking online at various other salons; I was ready for the $60 or $80 sticker price. After all, I was spending $20 in Chinatown plus tip and tips for the super long relaxing shampoos and massages. But this Sunday at Hoshi CoupeII, and the very end, the woman in charge said $40. I smiled, said thanks to all and gave Akemi $15 for just being who she is. One thing I did pick-up reading the salon comments was that your stylist should be the only person handling your hair, washing and cutting. Akemi is the It girl for me @ Hoshi Coupe II.
- Pros: Late hours on weekends.
- Cons: Minimalism , cool music playing low, relaxing zen-like atmosphere
great place to go if you definitely want asian cut!

i got my haircut in october so this might not even too updated. the reason i am giving the review is to give justice to some of the pros at hoishi.
i have been to many salons in nyc to find the person who can give me THE CUT. finally, upon a passing discussion with my friend, i decided to come to hoishi. the stylist, sayuri, or something that sounded like that was excellent at thinning out my thick asian hair.
i have been to posh salons from williamsburg to sunnyside but this is the first time i found one that gave me what i wanted.
sayuri had language difficulties. i remember her asking me if i wanted to "glow" my hair. i finally figured out she meant grow. she listens, however, and gave me what i wanted. its too bad her visa ends this month so i have to rush and get another cut before she leaves.
i agree, however, with comment of some customers about some staff members with an attitude. a male stylist was trying to be snotty. he might have been thinking he worked for the stars.
overall, wonderful experience. again, except for the no-card policy.
- Pros: great for asian hair or for asian-inspired styles. also if you want to devolumize hair
- Cons: cash only. is it for taxation purposes?
Hoshi Coupe SOHO - watch your color!!
by Melbourner
"Be afraid, be very, very afraid. DO NOT let TAKA go near your hair with a bottle of color. I went in for a simple root touch up, so I thought. I have dark brunette hair, and left with bright red roots - lighter than my dark brunette - how did he pull that off? I went immediately to a salon around the corner on West Broadway, where they could see my roots while I was waiting on the sofa..
They fixed it perfectly - but Hoshi Coupe - needs to manage their colorists. This was OUTRAGEOUS!"
so-so stylist and attitude problem
by eknick
I had my first experience with Hoshi Coupe (II) couple of days ago. I've always had a above average standard for hair and I have to say my stylist was very average to the point I had to stop her several times during the cut to communicate her. another problem I had with them was their attitude problem, i was asked to 'clean' my seat because I left a magazine on the chair while paying for my haircut (they dont accept Credit card). I told them NO since the magazine was already there on the chair when before I even came into the store, they gave me a very uncomfortable and condescending look aka 'get the F out of here' (accompanied by other staff as well). I strongly recommend avoiding this place at all cost, since there are other much better alternatives just a few blocks from this place.
- Pros: comfortable haircut
- Cons: soso stylist, dirty restroom, attitude problem with the owner
