Editorial Review for Astor Place Hair – by Daniella Brodsky
The Scene
A village legend, this no-frills, family-owned hair salon hasn't spent a penny on advertising--or, apparently, on interior design upgrades--since opening its doors. What Astor does have is a massive reputation for inexpensive, quality service on a walk-in basis. It's also a gigantic melting pot, where teens, celebs, Wall Street execs and soon-to-be punk NYU freshman unite in the common goal of good hair. Three levels house eclectic stylist stations and the most large-scale collage of coiffed images you've ever seen, featuring celebs who've enjoyed Astor 'dos.
The Services
Eighty-eight stylists specialize in everything from fades, etchings, color (punk to traditional) and curly styles to hair extensions, weaves and braiding. Way before it was trendy, Astor offered dry cuts for those looking to save time and money. Hot towel shaves, manicures and eyebrow and lip waxing are also available at excellent prices.

I found the fabulous Rita on Citysearch after going to a high (really HIGH!) priced salon in NYC and getting ripped off with bad color and even worse treatment. Needless to say, Rita saved my hair!!! Not only did she trim my hair so it looked healthier right away, she deep conditioned it, gave me solid advice and had me come back in 2 weeks for color. My hair is healthier, shinier, and in beter condition than ever! Her blonde highlights are so natural and sparkling, I can't say anything except this girl is a Magician! My fiance noticed how perfect my hair is now, and we just hired her for our wedding for hair, makeup and grooming for the guys . I cannot live without her. They call her "The Angel of Astor Place", and it is an honest statement of how humane she is. She treated me and my traumatized hair with love, and it shows. And she has late hours for those of us who need them! Bless you Rita!
Pros: We love Rita!

After going to so many different people at so many salons all over the city, I happened upon Rita on a recommendation. I followed this tip up on the 'net, and I can honestly tell you that she reigns! Not only is she a pleasure to be around, but she listens to you and actually creates a color and style suited to YOU. You will not see yourself coming and going all over the place like all thse other high-profile stylists make us look-like cookiecutter images of each other. Rita took the time and energy to make me beautiful. But all of us who are blessed, YES, BLESSED to be her clients are blown away by her talent. So, sure, try the rest and when you're sick and tired of them, go to Rita. You will never want to go to anyone else.
Pros: Rita!
Cons: other stylists who are rude and loud
