Editorial Review for Il Giglio – by Ben Williams

The Scene
A harvest display, lace curtains and tapestries draped over peach pastel walls lend a homely feel to this small, unprepossessing room. A platoon of waiters darts around, anticipating every need of the Wall Streeters and Tribecans who make Il Giglio a regular port of call; diners are barely in their seats before complementary salami, parmesan and bruschetta have been delivered.

The Food
Despite the traditional atmosphere, the more adventurous dishes come off best. Appetizers like escargot perched inside mushrooms and clams laden with bacon offer piquant surprises that humdrum prosciutto and melon or mushy spaghetti bolognese just can't match--although when the kitchen does nail a classic, like gnocci with the perfect tomato and basil sauce or scampi bathed in a pellucid white wine, lemon and butter sauce, you'll appreciate the simple things in life. The centerpiece is a tender, falling-off-the-bone rack of lamb special that's generous enough for two.

Insider Tips

Wine List

Wines by the glass are mediocre at best; make sure you go by the bottle, where you'll find a solid mix of Italian and Californian wines from $40 up.

In the Family

Il Giglio's big sister is the better-known Il Mulino.

i did not expect anything from this place, even though i was told it was incredible. from the moment you walk in to the moment you walk out the door ... the staff... the food... lamb chops are heavenly, prosciutto with melon melts in your mouth, cheesecake is perfect. stop reading. start reserving. don't eat all day. come hungry. if you can limit yourself, expect to spend about $200.

This place serves really fantastic, standard Italian dishes. The antipasto that is set on the table in the minutes before even getting the menus is a very nice touch. The service is outstanding, yet in no way overbearing. The ambience isn't the greatest in the city, and it's pretty loud, but that seems almost irrelevant given the quality of everything else. We will be returning.

Pros: food, service

Cons: loud
