The Scene – Somehow, the sight of a woman skipping rope feels totally different when there's a boxing ring beside her and towering murals of Joe Louis and Jack Dempsey overhead. And while men still dominate this largely white-collar training ground, a few ladies do come in to pummel the sundry bags and (less often) to participate in Manhattan's largest boxing gym's monthly matches. Larry Holmes, Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson have made use of the facilities--attracted perhaps by the fairly private, rear second ring used primarily for group classes. – – The Workout –…

Church Street has showers but no towels, so you better pack some terry cloth.

This place rocks!

This place rocks! I saw the add saying "Face it, you're gym sucks" and you know what,? Mine did! I was totally uninspired where I was before heading to Church Street. The trainers are great and the live DJ is an awesome touch.

Great Place

by Michael Crown

I've been to a couple of different boxing gym's in town and I've got to say that Church St. is head and shoulders above the rest. It is the real deal but there's no attitude. I thought that I might be intimidated training alongside competitive fighters but not at all. Great place & highly recommend it!.

Don't expect to actually box

by KirkMcquest

O.K what they are doing here is not truly 'boxing'. It is bag hitting, and training for conditioning. I was here for two months, in that time I saw 2 sparring matches. That is ridiculous. 'Boxing' requires two people, in a ring, sparring. What they do here is just bag punching.

The only people who do spar are those with personal boxing trainers who are not employed by the gym, they just pay to use the gym equipment and train their fighters. When I asked about sparring I was basically brushed off, and it became obvious that sparring was not part of the program their. A true boxing experience starts you off with rudimentary bag training then moves you slowly into sparring at an increasing pace.

Great place if you want a 'boxing workout'. If you want to actually box, look elsewhere.

  • Pros: good bag work
  • Cons: hardly anyone spars, workouts never change

Great gym in Lower Manhattan

by iwasoncearockstar

I was looking for a gym to get back into shape, but I didn't want any anonymous chain either. I was slightly apprehensive to start with - boxing wasn't my thing. However, my reservations were totally unfounded - Church Street is a friendly place, the staff are great - knowledgeable too - and made me feel completely comfortable. I'd recommend the gym to anybody that wants something slightly different from treadmills and bikes or somebody who's looking for a great workout...this is it. Lots of trains nearby too, so you don't have to live/work nearby. Great value too, especially for Manhattan!!

  • Pros: Great gym, friendly staff & great value!
