The Scene – Somehow, the sight of a woman skipping rope feels totally different when there's a boxing ring beside her and towering murals of Joe Louis and Jack Dempsey overhead. And while men still dominate this largely white-collar training ground, a few ladies do come in to pummel the sundry bags and (less often) to participate in Manhattan's largest boxing gym's monthly matches. Larry Holmes, Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson have made use of the facilities--attracted perhaps by the fairly private, rear second ring used primarily for group classes. – – The Workout –…

Great gym in Lower Manhattan

by iwasoncearockstar

I was looking for a gym to get back into shape, but I didn't want any anonymous chain either. I was slightly apprehensive to start with - boxing wasn't my thing. However, my reservations were totally unfounded - Church Street is a friendly place, the staff are great - knowledgeable too - and made me feel completely comfortable. I'd recommend the gym to anybody that wants something slightly different from treadmills and bikes or somebody who's looking for a great workout...this is it. Lots of trains nearby too, so you don't have to live/work nearby. Great value too, especially for Manhattan!!

  • Pros: Great gym, friendly staff & great value!

Train with the best

by eisk7777

Here is what you get:

1- Clean gym and locker areas

2- Excellent staff/trainers... always looking to help with a smile

3- Awesome members... also looking to help out any way they can

4- Friendly environment

5- Respect for personal goals... whether it be health/fitness... or a pro/amateur title

Here is what you won't see:

1- Sharks looking to make the quick buck

2- Bad attitudes from members/staff (you're not going to see any locker room fighting at this gym)

3- Un-knowledgeable staff (they are either pros or amateurs still looking to make the pros)

I've been at this gym for almost 3 years... and I ain't looking to go anywhere else.

  • Pros: friendly staff/members, best value
