Editorial Review for Big Apple Greeter – by Mina Hochberg

Overview
If you're the kind of tourist who prefers a personable bed-and-breakfast to a generic hotel, this is your kind of experience. Big Apple Greeters is an assemblage of native New Yorkers who love the city so much that they've volunteered their free time to show it off. Your host-for-the-day arrives at your hotel then whisks you off to several neighborhoods by foot, bus or subway. (A free subway pass is part of the package.) It's like taking a walking tour with a knowledgeable friend. And the best part: It's all for free.

The Experience

All tours are personal and cater to your desires. If you follow fashion, request the Garment District and Soho. If you're into architecture, you might admire the Gothic arches of the Brooklyn Bridge as you walk underneath them. With a native New Yorker by your side, count on personal anecdotes to spice things up.

Insider Tips

Look Good

Love the city? Join the team. You need to be over 18 and be willing to commit to one four-hour session per month if you'd like to volunteer. An application and interview constitute the screening process.

The Extras

If English isn't your native tongue, don't worry. Altogether, the volunteers speak more than 20 different languages.

Know Before You Go

Because this not-for-profit organization is pairing you up with a regular Joe or Jane, you have to book your tour four weeks in advance. Your greeter has a busy schedule, too!

I can not understand why anyone would not want an Apple Greeter. It was so wonderful being met at the hotel and told, I'll take you wherever you want to go and smiling all the way and spend a 1/2 day roaming New York City!! It is the best thing going. The knowledge they share is wonderful. Talk about a private tour-this is the best!!!! And it's free, what more could you want?

Pros: Met at the hotel, Lots of knowledge, Very helpful
